About The Company

Our client is a creative team dedicated to developing immersive virtual reality experiences that tackle certain social themes. They thrive on collaboration and innovation, ensuring that every creator feels supported while working together to produce meaningful, high-impact digital stories.

The Role - What You’ll Do

You will be responsible for developing beautiful, mid-to-low poly character assets that align with our existing project brief. This involves modeling characters from concept art, creating clean topology optimized for rigging, and handling the full UV unwrapping and texturing process (including PBR maps). You’ll work hand-in-hand with the Art Director to iterate on designs, ensuring all visual assets meet the project's stylistic goals and stay on schedule. From time to time, you’ll also collaborate with the wider team to solve technical hurdles and ensure the final immersive experience is of the highest quality.

What You Bring - Key Skills \& Traits Essential

  • Proficiency in Maya, Blender, or equivalent 3D modeling software.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy, proportion, and surface detail.
  • Experience with texturing tools like Substance Painter or Marmoset.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates character modeling, specifically including stylized work.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain your artistic choices to the team.
  • Prior experience creating art for games, film, or interactive media.

Desirable

  • Familiarity with VR/XR design constraints and texture optimization.
  • Experience with Unity engine integration.
  • Basic understanding of rigging, skinning, and animation workflows.
  • Experience working in small, agile teams where you can "wear multiple hats."
  • Based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) or Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington). Remote options will be considered for the right candidate.

Perks \& Culture * Purpose-Driven Work: Contribute to a project with a deep, sensitive social impact. * Creative Autonomy: A highly iterative, collaborative environment where your artistic input is valued. * Contract Details: This is a freelance, project-based role with the potential for extension into future work.
