Job Duties – Telecommunications Technician
The Telecommunications Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and testing telecommunications systems and network infrastructure to ensure reliable communication services for residential, commercial, and industrial clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Installing, configuring, testing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment including fibre optic systems, data cabling, routers, switches, modems, wireless devices, and communication networks.
- Diagnosing faults and repairing telecommunications systems, network cabling, fibre connections, and communication equipment.
- Conducting fibre optic splicing, termination, and testing using specialised telecommunications testing equipment.
- Installing and maintaining structured cabling systems for voice, data, CCTV, alarm systems, and internet services.
- Reading and interpreting telecommunications network plans, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications.
- Performing network testing and signal strength analysis to identify service disruptions and performance issues.
- Ensuring telecommunications installations comply with New Zealand industry standards, health and safety requirements, and company procedures.
- Configuring customer premises equipment including routers, wireless access points, switches, and VoIP systems.
- Carrying out preventive maintenance and scheduled servicing of telecommunications infrastructure and equipment.
- Assisting in upgrading and expanding telecommunications networks and communication systems.
- Maintaining accurate service records, job reports, installation documentation, and maintenance logs.
- Liaising with customers, network engineers, suppliers, and management regarding technical issues and project requirements.
- Using diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot network connectivity and communication faults.
- Ensuring all work is completed within project deadlines and service level requirements.
- Following workplace health and safety procedures while working at heights, confined spaces, or outdoor network sites.
Minimum Requirements
- Relevant NZQF Level 4 qualification
- OR
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience
Hours: 32–40 hours per week
Pay Rate / Market Rate: NZD $25 – $35 per hour
Pay: $25.00 – $35.00 per hour
