Join our People & Capability team as an HR Advisor and help deliver high-quality HR advice and support across New Zealand Customs. Reporting to the Team Leader Human Resources, this fixed term / secondment opportunity is available through to May 2027 to cover parental leave and is based at the Wellington Customhouse.

  • Provide practical first-line HR advice and support to managers and staff across Customs.
  • Support employment relations matters, including working in a unionised environment and advising on disciplinary processes.
  • Help managers interpret employment terms and conditions, people policies, and related procedures.
  • Build strong working relationships and contribute to a responsive, trusted HR service.
  • Manage a varied workload, competing priorities, and deadlines with sound judgement and attention to detail.

You’ll play a key role in supporting HR operations and providing consistent first-line advice to managers and staff across the organisation. This is a great opportunity for an experienced, organised, proactive HR professional who enjoys building strong relationships, working through practical people matters, and contributing to a responsive and trusted HR service.

We would be particularly interested in hearing from candidates with experience working in a unionised environment, supporting employment relations matters, and advising managers through sound disciplinary processes. You will also help managers and team leaders interpret employment terms and conditions and apply Customs’ people-related policies and procedures.

You’ll be joining a supportive team environment where you’ll be encouraged to share ideas, contribute to continuous improvement, and develop your HR advisory experience across a varied workload. The role requires flexibility, sound judgement, and the ability to manage competing priorities while meeting deadlines.

To be successful, you’ll be a confident communicator and motivated self-starter with strong initiative, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in all things HR. Ideally you will at least 2 years advisory experience. You’ll be adaptable, solutions-focused, and keen to continue growing your capability in a busy and meaningful public sector environment.

The salary range for this fixed term / secondment opportunity is $89,802 – $115,658, dependent on relevant skills and experience and prorated accordingly.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident* and be able to obtain and maintain an Organisational Security clearance.

(*) A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last five years, (including five years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application.

A New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last five years, (including five years ago from the date of this application) and resides in New Zealand at time of application who has travelled out of New Zealand for short periods of time i.e. <6 months in one of the following countries: Australia, United Kingdom, United States or Canada and can provide police certificates from those countries for the period of absence.

Because of the nature of Customs’ work you must have a clear Police record. Organisational security clearances are mandatory and are conducted by Customs. You will also be required to pass a drug test.
