The Role

Carine Senior High School (SHS) is seeking an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Head of Learning Area (HOLA) – Home Economics to lead our Home Economics department from Term 1, 2027.

The department delivers a vibrant suite of food, textiles, and student, family and community courses across Years 7 to 12, supported by purpose-built kitchens, textiles spaces, and a team of dedicated teaching staff and Home Economics assistants.

In collaboration with the Principal and members of the administrative team, the HOLA provides educational leadership across the school and the wider community by developing and promoting the school vision and contributing to a positive, inclusive school culture.

Some of your key responsibilities may include:

  • Providing active educational leadership in the ongoing development and implementation of a positive, caring and high-performing learning environment across the Home Economics learning area and the broader school.
  • Line managing and supporting the team of Home Economics teachers and Home Economics Assistants. This would include managing performance development, classroom support, professional learning, and timetabling considerations within the learning area.
  • Oversee the design, delivery and review of lower school electives and senior secondary General courses across food, textiles, and child, family and community streams, ensuring alignment with the Western Australian Curriculum and School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) syllabus requirements.
  • Managing the Home Economics budget, consult on the selection of resources and equipment, and contribute to the school’s accountability and asset management processes — including kitchen and textiles equipment, consumables and ingredient procurement.
  • Ensuring food handling, hygiene, and workplace safety standards are upheld across all practical learning environments.
  • Building strong relationships with parents, local industry, and community organisations to enrich the Home Economics program and create authentic learning opportunities for students.

Our Home Economics Program

We offer a broad range of cooking, fashion and sewing electives in lower school. These continue into upper school with the addition of Children, Family and Community courses, providing students with relevant, practical pathways for life and work beyond school.
