Primary objective

Lead and manage Katherine High School’s strategic communications, media, marketing and stakeholder engagement to strengthen the

school’s profile and engagement with students, families, staff and the broader community. Provide high-level strategic communication and

media advice to the Principal and school leadership team, managing proactive communications, media enquiries, emerging issues and

sensitive or high-profile matters, while ensuring activities support the school’s strategic priorities and align with Department of Education

and Training and Northern Territory Government communication requirements.

Context statement

Katherine High School is the only government secondary school in Katherine, providing Years 7 to 12 education to students from diverse

social, educational and cultural backgrounds. The school offers a range of educational and pathway opportunities and is committed to

inclusive practice and the values of Inclusion, Respect, Effort and Resilience.

The Communications and Media Manager works closely with the Principal and school leadership team to lead strategic communications,

media, marketing and stakeholder engagement. Working with a high degree of professional judgement and autonomy, the role ensures

communications are accurate, timely and consistent with Department of Education and Training and Northern Territory Government

requirements while managing planned activities, emerging issues, media enquiries, critical incidents and other sensitive matters.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Lead the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s strategic communication, media, marketing and stakeholder

engagement activities, aligned with school priorities and Department of Education and Training and Northern Territory Government

requirements.

2. Provide high-level strategic communication, media and reputation-management advice to the Principal and school leadership team,

coordinating proactive and reactive communications, media enquiries, critical incidents and sensitive, emerging or high-profile matters.

3. Lead high-quality internal and external communications across multiple platforms, including the school website, social media,

newsletters, publications, media releases, promotional materials, photography, video, presentations and community information.

4. Promote school programs, educational opportunities, student and staff achievements, events and strategic initiatives through

coordinated marketing and communication campaigns that strengthen the school’s profile, reputation and engagement with students,

families and the broader community.

5. Build and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and carers, staff, Aboriginal families and organisations, community

groups, media, industry, government agencies and education and training partners, ensuring communication is accessible, culturally

appropriate, responsive and supports positive engagement with Katherine High School.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated substantial experience in strategic communications, media, marketing and stakeholder engagement, including developing

and implementing strategies, campaigns and projects that support organisational priorities and strengthen organisational reputation.

2. Demonstrated high-level written, verbal and digital communication skills, with experience developing, editing and quality-assuring

engaging, audience-appropriate content across websites, social media, publications, media, promotional materials and multimedia

content.

3. Demonstrated ability to provide high-level strategic advice to senior leaders and exercise sound judgement, initiative and discretion in

managing media enquiries, emerging issues, critical incidents, competing priorities and sensitive or high-profile matters.

4. Demonstrated highly developed interpersonal, stakeholder engagement and cross-cultural communication skills, with the ability to

establish productive relationships with diverse communities and stakeholders, including Aboriginal people and organisations, community

groups, government agencies, media and external partners.

5. Demonstrated ability to lead approaches supporting student wellbeing, engagement and inclusion, build positive relationships with

students and effectively engage parents, carers and families with complex needs while managing sensitive matters with empathy,

professionalism, confidentiality and sound judgement.

Desirable

1. Previous communications or media experience in education, government, community or a similarly complex organisation, particularly

within a regional or culturally diverse environment.
