Position Overview

We are seeking compassionate, experienced, and relationship-focused Academic Interventionists (Credentialed Teachers) to join our multidisciplinary team. Academic Interventionists provide individualized and small-group instruction to children and adolescents who may benefit from targeted, systematic academic intervention beyond traditional tutoring or homework support.

Using their professional expertise as credentialed educators, Academic Interventionists assess student strengths and areas of need, develop individualized instructional goals and plans, deliver evidence-based intervention, monitor student progress, and adjust instruction in response to student performance.

Students may include children performing below grade-level expectations; students with learning disabilities, ADHD, executive functioning needs, or other learning differences; homeschool students requiring individualized academic instruction; and students who would benefit from enrichment or accelerated learning opportunities.

Academic Interventionists may also provide guidance to SHINE Academic Tutors by developing or recommending instructional plans, selecting appropriate resources and strategies, reviewing student progress data, and supporting consistent implementation of individualized learning goals.

This position is particularly well suited for experienced classroom teachers, special education teachers, intervention teachers, reading specialists, retired educators, and other credentialed professionals who want to continue making a meaningful difference for students without the demands of a traditional classroom position.

SHINE offers flexible per diem scheduling based on educator availability and student needs, including after-school, evening, and weekend opportunities. Academic Interventionists may begin with a limited caseload and expand their schedules as desired and as SHINE's academic programs continue to grow.

Key Academic Tutor Responsibilities

• Create a warm, structured, inclusive, and academically engaging learning environment where students feel safe, respected, challenged, and capable of success
• Develop strong relationships with students while maintaining high, individualized expectations for academic growth, engagement, perseverance, and independence
• Provide individualized and small-group targeted academic intervention in reading, written language, mathematics, executive functioning, study skills, and other areas aligned with professional expertise
• Review available educational records, assessment information, student work, parent input, and other relevant information to develop an understanding of each student's learning profile
• Administer and interpret appropriate academic screening, diagnostic, curriculum-based, and progress-monitoring measures within the educator's professional scope and training
• Identify patterns of academic strengths and needs and use assessment information to establish meaningful, measurable instructional goals
• Develop individualized instructional plans based on student needs, assessment information, parent priorities, and ongoing performance data
• Design and implement intentional, systematic, and appropriately challenging instruction aligned with individual student goals
• Use evidence-based instructional practices to strengthen foundational academic skills and address identified learning gaps
• Differentiate instruction, pacing, materials, scaffolding, and levels of support based on individual student performance and learning needs
• Provide explicit instruction, modeling, guided practice, corrective feedback, repeated practice, and opportunities for independent application and generalization of skills
• Support students in developing executive functioning skills, including organization, planning, task initiation, time management, self-monitoring, and learning independence
• Provide enrichment and advanced learning opportunities when appropriate to extend student thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and academic engagement
• Monitor student progress through ongoing observation, work samples, curriculum-based measures, formative assessment, and other appropriate data sources
• Analyze student performance and progress-monitoring data to evaluate the effectiveness of instruction
• Modify instructional goals, strategies, pacing, and intervention intensity in response to student progress
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of instructional services, student performance, progress, and recommendations
• Communicate professionally and collaboratively with parents and caregivers regarding student strengths, areas of need, progress, and strategies for supporting learning
• Provide families with clear, understandable information about student progress while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries
• Develop or recommend instructional plans, resources, and strategies for implementation by SHINE Academic Tutors when appropriate
• Review progress information collected by Academic Tutors and provide instructional guidance and recommendations
• Collaborate with SHINE's educators, speech-language professionals, occupational therapy professionals, administrators, and other team members to support the whole child
• Participate in interdisciplinary consultation, team meetings, training, and professional development as appropriate
• Maintain student and family confidentiality and comply with all SHINE policies related to documentation, professional conduct, student safety, mandated reporting, and privacy
• Maintain a clean, organized, welcoming, and instructionally appropriate learning environment

Qualifications

• Valid California teaching credential required
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; master's degree preferred
• Minimum of two years of successful teaching, intervention, special education, or closely related instructional experience preferred
• Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices and differentiated instruction
• Strong understanding of academic development and foundational skills in reading, written language, and/or mathematics
• Experience working with students who have learning disabilities, ADHD, executive functioning challenges, developmental differences, or other diverse learning needs strongly preferred
• Experience with academic assessment, progress monitoring, data-based instructional decision-making, and individualized instructional planning
• Ability to interpret educational information and translate assessment findings into practical, targeted instructional goals
• Reading Specialist, Education Specialist, Special Education, mathematics, literacy, structured literacy, dyslexia, or other specialized training highly valued
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to communicate student progress and instructional recommendations clearly and professionally to families and team members
• Comfortable using technology, digital instructional resources, and electronic documentation systems
• Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification upon hire
• Ability to pass DOJ/FBI fingerprint clearance, TB clearance, and all other required employment screenings
• Reliable transportation and ability to report consistently to scheduled sessions at SHINE's Placentia clinic
