Job Description

Ka whati te tai, ka pao te tōrea

When opportunity arises, we must be ready to strike before it passes.

About the Role

We have a rare opportunity for an experienced Electrician to step into a Technical Lead role within our Maintenance Engineering team at Lyttelton Port. Reporting to the Electrical Manager, you’ll provide technical leadership across electrical maintenance and troubleshooting for fixed plant, mobile plant, and infrastructure assets, while ensuring all electrical activities remain aligned with current New Zealand regulations and LPC best-practice standards.

You’ll act as the electrical subject matter expert across LPC, supporting the delivery of electrical elements of projects, overseeing the installation and commissioning of new plant and equipment, and working closely with operational and engineering stakeholders to improve reliability, performance, and safety across the port. A key part of the role will be building technical capability within the existing Electrical Department by coaching team members, sharing specialist knowledge, and helping develop practical training pathways that strengthen fault-finding, automation, and electrical systems expertise

What sets you apart

You bring strong technical capability, practical problem-solving skills, and experience working in a heavy industrial or operational environment.

  • NZ Registered Electrician with a current practising licence.
  • At least five years’ experience in electrical maintenance, ideally within a port or heavy industrial environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic experience across fixed plant, mobile plant, automated systems including PLCs, Human Machine Interface and SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with maintenance planning, preventative maintenance, or asset management systems.
  • Experience developing or maintaining technical documentation, including manuals, procedures, fault-finding guides, and reference material for a technical library.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and support existing Electrical Department team members, helping lift technical capability and promote consistent best-practice approaches across the team.
  • Full Class 1 NZ Driver Licence (Class 2 preferred).
  • Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and around water.
  • Strong communication skills, a safety-first mindset, and the ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team.
