Support Teaching and Student Learning in Higher Education

A Teaching Fellow or Tutor at Victoria University of Wellington provides academic support across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This role involves assisting lecturers with course delivery, running tutorials, supporting student learning, and contributing to assessment and marking processes. It is commonly a part-time or fixed-term position suited to postgraduate students or early-career academics.

What You'll Do?

Teaching \& Student Support

Run tutorials, workshops, or laboratory sessions.

Explain lecture content in smaller group settings.

Support students with assignments and academic skill development.

Respond to student questions and provide academic guidance.

Assessment \& Marking

Mark assignments, essays, quizzes, and examinations.

Provide clear and constructive feedback on student performance.

Apply marking rubrics consistently and fairly.

Assist lecturers with grading large student cohorts.

Course Support

Assist lecturers with course preparation and delivery.

Help develop teaching materials such as slides, worksheets, and online resources.

Support learning management systems such as Moodle or similar platforms.

Academic Collaboration

Work closely with course coordinators and lecturers.

Attend training, briefing, and moderation sessions.

Participate in assessment moderation and quality assurance processes.

What We're Looking For:

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline.

Strong academic performance in the subject area.

Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively.

Good organisational and time-management skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Skills

Honours, Master’s, or PhD (particularly for Teaching Fellow roles).

Previous tutoring or teaching experience.

Familiarity with university assessment and marking systems.

Experience in student mentoring or academic support.
