Surfacing Department Manager
Job Description

Mō te tūranga \| About the role

Ready to lead from the front and shape the future of surfacing in Gisborne? At Fulton Hogan, we’re after a Surfacing Department Manager to take ownership of our surfacing programme, lead a capable team, and deliver good work for our clients and communities.

This is a role with real scope. You’ll lead planning and delivery across surfacing operations, manage pricing and delivery for external works, and keep a close eye on safety, quality, relationships, and financial performance. You’ll be trusted to make things happen, back your people, and keep standards high without the red tape.

If you know how to build strong teams, run a high-performing operation, and deliver serious work without the stiff corporate carry-on, this could be your next move.

  • Lead the Surfacing Department with clear health and safety expectations and a strong safety-first mindset.
  • Plan, programme and deliver surfacing works for key clients and external customers across Gisborne.
  • Coordinate site crews, plant, materials and subcontractors to keep work moving safely, on time and to a high standard.
  • Oversee project planning, resource coordination, reporting, claims and programme performance.
  • Build a team culture that backs people, values straight-up communication, and delivers good work right the first time.

  • Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Class 1 driver licence, with WTR preferred.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the civil construction industry and 2 years’ experience in a similar management role.
  • Strong commercial, financial and operational acumen, with the ability to lead people and manage competing priorities.
  • A practical, proactive and team-focused style, with safety, respect and good work at the centre of how you lead.

He pai te mahi, he pai ngā painga \| Good work, good benefits

At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us. You’ll have access to:

  • Life insurance from day one.
  • KiwiSaver employer contributions after service milestones, up to 7%.
  • Parental leave top up payment with additional return to work support.
  • Ongoing training and development, with clear career growth and progression opportunities.
  • Great discounts at a wide range of retailers.

Ko wai mātou \| About us

At Fulton Hogan, good work is more than what we deliver. It’s how we show up for each other, our clients, and the communities we work in. We’re flat, friendly and forward moving. Titles matter less than ideas. We back our people, keep things human, and set high standards when it counts.

In Gisborne, you’ll be part of a team that knows how to get stuck in, work together, and keep pushing for better. We take the work seriously, not ourselves. That means honest conversations, real responsibility, and the chance to make a genuine impact in a business that’s always moving forward.

Me pēhea te tono \| How to apply

If you’re ready to lead a high-performing surfacing team, build strong client relationships, and deliver good work across Gisborne, we’d love to hear from you.
