Anaesthesia Specialist/Consultant is responsible for providing safe, high-quality perioperative care before, during, and after surgical and diagnostic procedures. The role also includes critical care, pain management, emergency response, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Roles and Responsibilities
1. Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment
- Evaluate patients before surgery through detailed history, physical examination, and review of investigations.
- Assess anaesthetic risks and determine fitness for anaesthesia.
- Obtain informed consent for anaesthesia.
- Develop individualized anaesthesia plans based on patient condition and surgical requirements.
- Optimize patients with coexisting medical conditions in consultation with other specialists.
2. Administration of Anaesthesia
- Administer general, regional, spinal, epidural, local, and monitored anaesthesia care (MAC) as appropriate.
- Select suitable anaesthetic agents, medications, and techniques.
- Ensure patient safety throughout induction, maintenance, and recovery from anaesthesia.
- Maintain accurate anaesthesia records.
3. Intraoperative Patient Management
- Continuously monitor vital signs, oxygenation, ventilation, circulation, and depth of anaesthesia.
- Manage airway using advanced airway techniques.
- Maintain fluid balance, electrolyte status, and blood transfusion requirements.
- Recognize and manage intraoperative complications promptly.
- Coordinate with surgeons, nursing staff, and operating theatre personnel.
4. Post-Anaesthesia Care
- Supervise patient recovery in the Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU).
- Monitor for postoperative complications including respiratory depression, nausea, pain, and hemodynamic instability.
- Determine discharge readiness from recovery.
- Ensure safe postoperative pain management.
5. Pain Management
- Provide acute postoperative pain services.
- Manage chronic pain conditions through multimodal treatment approaches.
- Perform nerve blocks, epidural analgesia, and other interventional pain procedures.
- Educate patients regarding pain control strategies.
6. Critical Care Responsibilities
- Manage critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
- Provide mechanical ventilation management.
- Perform advanced hemodynamic monitoring.
- Manage sepsis, shock, trauma, and multiorgan failure.
- Participate in multidisciplinary ICU rounds.
7. Emergency and Resuscitation Services
- Respond to medical emergencies and cardiac arrest situations.
- Perform Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
- Manage difficult airways and emergency intubations.
- Provide anaesthesia support for emergency surgeries.
8. Procedural Sedation
- Administer conscious sedation for endoscopy, radiology, cardiology, oncology, and other diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
- Monitor patient safety during sedation and recovery.
9. Quality and Patient Safety
- Adhere to hospital protocols and international anaesthesia safety guidelines.
- Conduct equipment safety checks before procedures.
- Participate in infection prevention and control practices.
- Report and analyze adverse events and near misses.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
10. Clinical Documentation
- Maintain complete and accurate patient records.
- Document anaesthesia techniques, medications, monitoring data, and postoperative assessments.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and medico-legal requirements.
11. Teaching and Training
- Train junior doctors, residents, interns, nurses, and operating theatre staff.
- Conduct clinical teaching sessions, workshops, and simulation training.
- Mentor postgraduate students where applicable.
12. Research and Continuous Professional Development
- Participate in clinical research and audits.
- Stay updated with advances in anaesthesia, critical care, and pain medicine.
- Attend Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs and conferences.
13. Administrative Responsibilities
- Participate in departmental meetings and policy development.
- Assist in operating theatre scheduling and resource planning.
- Ensure availability and maintenance of anaesthesia equipment and drugs.
- Support accreditation activities (e.g., NABH, JCI) and compliance requirements.
14. Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work closely with surgeons, physicians, intensivists, emergency physicians, radiologists, nursing teams, pharmacists, and allied health professionals.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and perioperative planning.
- Facilitate coordinated patient care across departments.

Specific Education and Experience required for Anaesthesia Specialist / Consultant along with Oman MOH requirements
Following education and experience requirements should align with international practice while incorporating the current Oman Ministry of Health (MOH)/OMSB licensing requirements.
Education:
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized university.
- MD/DNB (Anaesthesiology) or equivalent postgraduate qualification recognized by the Oman Ministry of Health/OMSB.
- IDCCM, Fellowship in Critical Care, Cardiac Anaesthesia, Neuroanaesthesia, Paediatric Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine, or Regional Anaesthesia is desirable.
- Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification; Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is preferred for hospitals providing pediatric services.
- Current medical registration/license from the country of practice.
Experience:
- Completion of an accredited postgraduate residency/training program in Anaesthesiology.
- Minimum 3–5 years of post-specialization clinical experience in a tertiary care or corporate hospital.
Demonstrated Experience in:
- General, regional, spinal, and epidural anaesthesia.
- Airway management, including difficult airway techniques.
- Anaesthesia for major surgical specialties.
- ICU and ventilator management.
- Procedural sedation.
- Acute postoperative pain management.
- Emergency and trauma anaesthesia.
- Minimum 3–6 years of post-specialization experience.
- Proven experience in independently managing complex and high-risk surgical cases.
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, mentoring junior physicians, and participating in quality improvement and clinical governance.
- Academic, research, or teaching experience is desirable.
Oman MOH / OMSB Requirements
Candidates should meet the licensing requirements prescribed by the Oman Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB), including:
- Recognized MBBS and postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesiology.
- Successful Primary Source Verification (DataFlow/PSV) of educational qualifications, professional registration, and work experience.
- Passing the OMSB Occupational Classification (Pearson VUE) examination and any required assessment/interview, unless exempt under applicable regulations.
- Valid Certificate of Good Standing from the current or most recent licensing authority.
- Valid passport and other documents required for professional registration.
- Eligibility for professional registration and licensing with the Oman MOH before commencement of employment. The licensing process generally involves OMSB assessment of specialty qualifications and MOH issuance of the professional license.
