Software Engineer - Testing (Manual & Systems Focus)
Job Description

ATM Squad - Payments Tribe

At ASB, we’re focused on helping our customers get One Step Ahead by building and supporting technology that underpins everyday banking for New Zealanders.

Our platforms don’t serve ads or stream movies – they support real customers, real money, and real‑world services. One of those is our nationwide ATM network, and we’re looking for a Software Engineer – Testing to join our ATM Squad within the Payments Tribe.

About the role

ASB manages and maintains 350+ ATM machines across Aotearoa New Zealand, forming a critical part of our customer offering.

This role has a strong focus on hands‑on, manual testing in a complex systems environment. You’ll be involved in testing changes across physical ATM machines, validating vendor‑delivered software, and supporting both BAU and project work. While you’ll be exposed to modern engineering and automation practices, this is not an automation‑heavy role and is best suited to someone who enjoys system and integration testing.

You’ll work as part of a small squad within the Engineering Practice, operating in an agile way and contributing to decisions around prioritisation and quality. Over the next 12–24 months, the ATM environment will undergo significant transformation, offering the opportunity to build experience in a large‑scale enterprise platform.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll contribute to activities such as:

  • Reviewing requirements and specifications
  • Contributing to testing strategies and test plans
  • ATM functional and system testing (including hands‑on testing on machines)
  • System integration and end‑to‑end testing
  • Validating vendor or third‑party software before rollout
  • Supporting regression testing for BAU and project changes
  • Analysing and reporting test results
  • Working with engineers, testers, and stakeholders to support end‑to‑end testing and sign‑off

Attention to detail and a structured, methodical approach are key to being successful in this role.

About you

We’re looking for someone with solid testing fundamentals who enjoys working close to systems and learning how complex platforms operate end to end.

You’ll bring:

  • Hands‑on experience in manual testing
  • Exposure to functional, system, integration, or end‑to‑end testing
  • Ability to create and maintain test artefacts
  • A logical, analytical mindset and good attention to detail
  • Experience working in agile teams

It would be beneficial if you also have:

  • Exposure to Linux‑based environments (e.g. viewing logs, understanding how services run)
  • Experience testing workstation, device, platform, or integration‑heavy systems
  • Some exposure to test automation or CI/CD tooling
  • Financial services or regulated environment experience

Previous ATM experience is not required – curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are more important.

Working for ASB

ASB’s values guide how we work with our people, customers, and communities. We’re committed to creating a safe, inclusive environment where everyone can grow and do their best work.
