We are looking for a talented Senior Technical Business Analyst to join the Digital Travel portfolio. You’ll be someone who thinks beyond requirements, is ready to deeply understand the problem at hand, and explore opportunities. From early discovery through to delivery, you will ensure we’re building the right things the right way.

About this role…

Reporting to the Product Manager - NZTD, the Senior Technical Business Analyst is accountable for providing the product delivery teams with the customer and users detailed and validated requirements, and underlying needs. You will advocate for their business objectives and goals, associated priorities, business drivers and impacts, and help determine what success looks like.

Through partnering with key stakeholders and SME’s, the Senior Technical Business Analyst creates user stories, facilitates refinement sessions and other Agile operating rhythms, and helps the team to break work down into more manageable business value delivery chunks.

The Senior Technical Business Analyst operates at team level but is also the bridge between other Government agency Business Analyst’s to ensure the effective evolution of the Digital Travel product set.

The Senior Technical Business Analyst will also work closely with the Product Manager and Product Owner to obtain regular feedback throughout the product development lifecycle, including participating in product discovery rhythms, and leading UAT testing and ultimately UAT acceptance for releases.

To be successful as Senior Technical Business Analyst the following knowledge, experience, skills and personal attributes are required…

  • 5 years+ of relevant hands-on experience as a technical business analyst working within ICT solution delivery, ideally in software development BAU teams within complex technology environments;
  • Hands-on experience with all stages of the product life cycle and all aspects of operational support of business-critical services;
  • Experience working within an Agile delivery framework, alongside understanding of methodologies across devops, lean, and product management;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with an ability to understand complex challenges/concepts and articulate these in simplified and easy to understand manner;
  • The proven ability to work well in a highly collaborative manner;
  • The ability to work flexibly, delivering change and support across multiple products and services;
  • Able to adapt to and learn new technologies and methodologies as required;
  • Good knowledge of relevant software development topics including development languages, databases, integration, DevOps, build pipelines, automation, API’s, cloud concepts, as well as an understanding of other related areas such as UX design, product development, networking, security compliance, capacity management etc;
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

To join Customs in any role you must be a New Zealand citizen or NZ permanent resident. *

  • This means:

  • a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided continuously in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at time of application; OR

  • a New Zealand Citizen or New Zealand Permanent Resident who has resided in New Zealand for the last 5 years and resides in NZ at the time of application. You may have been absent from New Zealand for periods of six or more months within the past five years, preferably in one or more of the following countries: either Australia, Canada, UK or the USA. You will be required to provide overseas police certificates for these periods spent outside of New Zealand.

You must have a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service towards a recommendation of suitability for security clearance at a higher level. Due to the nature of Customs work, you must have a clear Police record. The successful applicant will also be required to pass a drug test as well as being subject to random, ongoing drug tests during their period of employment with Customs. (These requirements apply to all successful applicants for roles at Customs and Customs employees.)
