Senior Software Engineer (Backend) — Job Description

Overview

Designs, builds, and operates backend services that power applications. Owns system architecture decisions, ensures reliability and performance, reviews code, mentors engineers, and collaborates across product, frontend, and infrastructure teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement backend services and APIs (REST/GraphQL/RPC as applicable).
• Own backend architecture: data flow, service boundaries, scalability, reliability, and performance.
• Build maintainable systems with strong engineering practices (testing, code reviews, versioning, documentation).
• Develop and maintain databases and data-access layers (schema design, migrations, indexing, query optimization).
• Implement observability (logs/metrics/traces), dashboards, and alerting; drive incident response improvements.
• Ensure security best practices (authn/authz, secrets handling, input validation, secure dependencies).
• Improve system resilience (caching, retries/timeouts, idempotency, bulkheads, circuit breakers—where relevant).
• Lead technical design reviews and propose/refine solutions with trade-offs.
• Mentor team members; raise engineering standards through reviews and pair programming.
• Collaborate with DevOps/SRE for CI/CD, infrastructure needs, and operational excellence.

Required Qualifications

• Strong backend experience building production systems with one or more: Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Node.js, C#, or similar.
• Solid software engineering fundamentals: data structures/algorithms, design patterns, concurrency, and distributed-system concepts.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases; proficiency with SQL or equivalent query languages.
• Practical experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and/or containerization (Docker).
• Proficiency with at least one modern backend framework and API development.
• Strong testing skills (unit/integration tests) and CI workflows.
• Experience with monitoring/observability and debugging production issues.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with microservices and service-to-service communication (HTTP/gRPC, messaging like Kafka/RabbitMQ/SQS).
• Experience with performance tuning, load testing, and capacity planning.
• Familiarity with event-driven architectures and data pipelines.
• Experience with authentication/authorization systems (OAuth2/OIDC, JWT) and security reviews.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD optimization (Terraform, Helm, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, etc.).
• Tech leadership: owning features end-to-end, influencing architecture, mentoring.

Pay: RO1,465.340 - RO1,849.340 per month
