Primary objective
Lead and coordinate technical support for Fisheries Research by supervising staff, undertaking field work, managing technical
resources and assets, maintaining safe work practices, developing workforce capability, and providing high-quality technical
advice to support research priorities.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Supervise technical staff and coordinate day-to-day work activities to support delivery of Fisheries Research priorities.
2. Assist with allocation of technical staff, facilities and equipment to meet business and operational plan priorities.
3. Ensure work practices comply with work health and safety requirements for laboratory, field and vessel operations.
4. Oversee staff development and training to maintain the technical capability of the work unit.
5. Coordinate casual staff and contractors engaged in technical and research support activities.
6. Provide sound technical advice to staff, stakeholders and members of the public on fisheries research practices,
equipment and operational matters.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A qualification in Science, Natural Resources or similar, or equivalent relevant experience
2. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in fisheries research practices, including safe and efficient field sampling
techniques, data collection, laboratory techniques, and the ability to lead a team in the field.
3. High level written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate effectively with a diverse
range of stakeholders, including people from diverse cultures.
4. Proven experience in training and mentoring staff.
5. Extensive experience in vessel operation and maintenance, including an understanding of associated survey
requirements.
6. A recognised qualification and extensive experience in electrofishing techniques.
7. Coxswain certificate, current ‘C’ class driver’s licence with extensive experience in 4x4 vehicles.
Desirable
1. A Master \< 24m NC and a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 NC Certificate or above.
2. Certificate IV in training and assessment.
