The role is a Head Office position providing mechanical engineering authority from early-stage design and method review through to pre-commissioning, commissioning and handover. The individual will act as the primary technical reference for all mechanical scopes across the project portfolio, with particular emphasis on wind turbine installation engineering, major component handling, drivetrain and nacelle systems, solar mounting and tracker mechanical works, and BESS thermal and mechanical integration. Effective coordination with civil, structural, electrical and controls disciplines is a core requirement of the role.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design Authority \& Technical Governance

  • Act as mechanical design authority for all mechanical scopes across the wind, solar PV and BESS project portfolio, including turbine installation, major component handling, balance-of-plant mechanical systems, solar mounting structures, tracking systems and BESS enclosure and thermal systems.
  • Define, maintain and enforce Owner mechanical design standards, installation philosophies, acceptance criteria and quality benchmarks for all mechanical works.
  • Review, challenge and approve EPC contractor and OEM mechanical designs, engineering drawings, installation procedures, technical specifications and material submittals.
  • Evaluate OEM installation manuals, technical requirements and warranty provisions to ensure construction methodology compliance across all mechanical scopes.
  • Identify constructability constraints and optimisation opportunities during design and pre-construction review phases, proposing practical and cost-effective engineering solutions.
  • Maintain a structured technical submittal register, RFI log and NCR tracker across all active mechanical scopes and projects.

Wind Turbine Installation Engineering

  • Lead technical review and approval of wind turbine erection methodologies covering tower section assembly, nacelle lift and installation, hub assembly, blade handling and full rotor installation sequences.
  • Review and approve lift plans, crane selection justifications, rigging arrangements, lifting spreader beam calculations and dynamic load assessments for all major WTG component lifts.
  • Evaluate turbine installation method statements for compliance with OEM requirements, site-specific conditions, wind speed limitations, crane pad design and access route constraints.
  • Review drivetrain and nacelle mechanical interface documentation: main shaft, gearbox, generator, yaw system, pitch system and auxiliary mechanical components.
  • Assess mechanical installation tolerances, alignment procedures, bolt torque specifications and pre-commissioning mechanical checks for all WTG systems.
  • Coordinate with the turbine OEM on technical queries, installation deviations, non-conformances and warranty-critical mechanical requirements throughout erection and commissioning.
  • Review and approve pre-commissioning inspection records, mechanical completion certificates and readiness documentation for WTG handover to the commissioning team.

Solar PV Mechanical Systems – Mounting Structures \& Trackers

  • Lead technical review and approval of solar PV fixed-tilt and single-axis tracker (SAT) mechanical installation methodologies, including structural assembly sequences, module installation, drive unit installation and torque tube alignment.
  • Review tracker OEM mechanical interface requirements: drive mechanism, motor mounting, control linkages, stow position settings and wind survival criteria.
  • Evaluate solar mounting structure assembly procedures for structural tolerance compliance, bolt torque requirements, module clamp specifications and anti-corrosion system requirements.
  • Assess mechanical handling procedures for PV modules including transport, unloading, staging and installation methods to prevent damage and ensure warranty compliance.
  • Review ITP requirements for solar mounting structure and tracker mechanical works including dimensional checks, torque verification, alignment surveys and functional testing.
  • Coordinate with solar tracker OEMs on installation queries, deviation management and warranty-critical mechanical and drive system requirements.

BESS Mechanical Systems \& Thermal Management

  • Lead technical review and approval of BESS container and enclosure installation methodologies including transport, unloading, positioning, levelling, anchoring and inter-container mechanical connections.
  • Review BESS thermal management system designs and installation specifications including HVAC units, cooling systems, ventilation arrangements and temperature monitoring integration.
  • Evaluate BESS mechanical interface documentation: container structural connections, cable entry management, fire suppression system mechanical interfaces and access door and personnel safety provisions.
  • Assess mechanical risks associated with BESS installation including thermal runaway containment provisions, pressure relief arrangements and emergency ventilation design.
  • Review pre-commissioning mechanical checks for BESS enclosures: cooling system operational verification, door sealing integrity, drainage provisions and containment bund inspections.
  • Coordinate with BESS integrators and OEMs on technical installation queries, deviation management and warranty-critical mechanical requirements.

Heavy Lift \& Rigging Engineering

  • Review and approve lift plans for all critical and non-routine lifts across wind, solar and BESS scopes, including crane selection, ground bearing pressure calculations, lift radius assessments and rigging configuration reviews.
  • Evaluate crane manufacturer specifications, load charts and site-specific capacity assessments for crawler cranes, mobile cranes and specialised WTG erection cranes.
  • Review rigging equipment certifications, lifting tackle inspection records and proof load test documentation for all project lifting equipment.
  • Conduct or chair lift risk assessments (HAZID/HAZOP for critical lifts) and review toolbox talks and pre-lift briefing documentation.
  • Ensure all lifting operations comply with applicable lifting standards including LOLER, ASME B30, ISO 4306 and relevant local regulatory requirements.

Construction Quality Assurance \& Site Support

  • Review and approve construction method statements, inspection and test plans (ITPs) and quality control procedures for all mechanical works across wind, solar and BESS scopes.
  • Conduct technical site visits to review mechanical installation progress, verify compliance with approved methods, assess workmanship quality and provide on-site engineering guidance.
  • Manage mechanical non-conformance resolution (NCRs), engineering queries (RFIs) and technical clarifications during construction and commissioning phases.
  • Review equipment certification documentation: material certificates, factory acceptance test (FAT) records, dimensional inspection reports and OEM factory test certificates.
  • Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities for all mechanical systems, ensuring mechanical completion readiness prior to energization and operational testing.

Interface Coordination \& Multi-Discipline Integration

  • Coordinate with structural engineers on mechanical-structural interfaces: WTG foundation embedment ring, tower base interface, nacelle bed frame connections and BESS container anchor systems.
  • Coordinate with electrical engineers on mechanical-electrical interfaces: cable gland entries, conduit routing through mechanical enclosures, earthing connections on rotating equipment and BESS container electrical interface panels.
  • Coordinate with controls and SCADA teams on mechanical system sensor installations, actuator interfaces and data communication connections for WTG, tracker drive systems and BESS HVAC.
  • Coordinate with procurement on technical evaluation of mechanical equipment suppliers, OEM tenders, lifting contractor pre-qualification and mechanical subcontract packages.
  • Provide mechanical engineering input to engineering risk assessments, value engineering reviews and lessons-learned processes across the project portfolio.

Requirements

  • Proven experience working in a Head Office or Owner’s Engineer capacity with design review, method approval and technical authority responsibilities.
  • Experience working under EPC, multi-contract or Owner-managed delivery models.
  • Experience working with Owners, IPPs, EPC contractors, WTG OEMs, solar tracker OEMs, BESS integrators or specialist mechanical consultants
