The Security Guard Site Supervisor is responsible for a team of around 30 security personnel, made up of four Section Leaders and 20+ indirect reports whose role is to ensure the provision of high quality and effective security and protective services in a high security environment. This is a high-functioning role primarily providing day to day operational oversight of the security guard force and management of a 24/7 roster. Devonport Naval Base is a large, busy, and dynamic site requiring a leader with a depth of well-rounded security experience and exceptional interpersonal and motivational skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing NZDF systems and ensuring SOPs are in place to recognise, report on, and take appropriate action.
  • Monitoring of; unauthorised access, persons, information risks, and risks to building security.
  • Reporting on security incidents and breaches.
  • Undertaking six monthly and annual performance development reviews, assessing the performance of each allocated team member.
  • Coaching, mentoring and developing staff by identifying key training and development needs and implementing development programmes to achieve required competency levels.
  • Championing health and safety standards for all staff and in line with NZDF protocols.
  • Liaising with onsite NZDF personnel at various levels on operational requirements.
  • Providing timely briefings and reports as required.
  • Providing input into security projects or initiatives as required.

Due to the nature of this role, there is no option to work remotely.

The salary range for this role is $77,141 to $85,594 inclusive of the 4% employer super contribution plus an additional on call/ call back allowance.

We are seeking candidates with 3-5 years experience in leading and managing teams, who are passionate about developing people and building capability. A key focus of this role is upskilling team members, so you should bring a strong commitment to coaching, mentoring, and fostering professional growth.

Equally important is your ability to create and sustain a supportive, inclusive team culture where individuals feel valued, engaged, and motivated to perform at their best.

Along with considerable security experience operating within a secure environment, you will be equipped with the knowledge or ability to manage a range of security systems and technology.

Additional skills and qualifications:

  • Comfortable with conducting performance reviews and having difficult conversations when required.
  • Ability to display initiative and good judgement.
  • Well-developed communication and relationship management skills.
  • Able to work well under pressure and effectively manage any situations that arise.
  • Strong organisational, prioritisation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with change management and driving a positive workplace culture.
  • Ability to write clear, concise incident reports and to interpret and apply standard operating procedures.
  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills.
  • A current (and maintained) First Aid Certificate.
  • A Full Class 1 NZ Driver Licence is required.

Highly desired:

  • Knowledge of the New Zealand Defence Force and the Protective Security Requirements (PSR).
  • Sound understanding of the provision of operational and protection function, preferably in the New Zealand Public/State Sector context.
  • A National Certificate in Security and/or similar experience.
  • Previous experience in a Security Leadership / Security Operations role.
  • Experience with HR/ER processes in relation to managing personnel performance.

An adequate level of health and physical fitness is required for this role. Physical tasks can include the requirement to walk long distances, climb stairs, stand or sit for long periods, and to respond physically in the event of an emergency.

  • You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
  • At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last ten (10) years.
  • You must have a ten (10) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
