Our Market Services group, within Operations, delivers outcomes that are fundamental to the performance of Transpowers System Operator function.

About the team

Market Services supports real-time operations, provides industry participants and stakeholders with information to inform market responses, supports new generation to commission and onboard into markets, and procures specialist products that enable secure market operations.

The group also engages with stakeholders, drives ongoing market development, contributes subject matter expertise to market system tools, supports System Operator strategy and performance reporting, and manages System Operator website information, information management services and operational procedure management.

The Opportunity

As Markets Technical Specialist, youll provide trusted technical leadership across electricity market systems, market design, market operations and the regulatory and economic drivers that influence system operations. This is a 12-month fixed-term opportunity, well suited to someone who can bring depth, pace and practical judgement to a defined period of important market services work.

Youll work at the interface of the Electricity Industry Participation Code, the System Operators market system tools, and the operational needs of System Operator teams, wholesale electricity market participants and market operations service providers.

Reporting to the Head of Market Services, youll lead technical advice, represent System Operator interests in system and market change initiatives, support real-time operations during complex events, and mentor colleagues across the Market Services group.

What will you bring?

Youll bring deep electricity market expertise, strong analytical judgement and the credibility to influence technical, operational, regulatory and executive audiences. Youll be comfortable working across market systems, policy, operations and technology delivery environments, with the ability to translate complexity into practical, risk-aware advice and solutions.

• Deep understanding of the New Zealand electricity market, including industry structure, market operations, the Code, market operations service provider roles and the System Operators role.
• Proven ability to represent business interests in significant technology investment, system enhancement or capital project environments, including as Product Owner, business lead or subject matter expert.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex operational, market and policy issues and develop practical, risk-aware solutions.
• Highly developed written, verbal and stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to influence technical, operational, regulatory and executive audiences.
• A collaborative leadership style, with the ability to mentor, coach and build capability across teams and less experienced practitioners.

Your CV and cover letter will demonstrate:

• A tertiary qualification in Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Economics, Operations Research or a comparable field.
• Deep experience with electricity market systems, market design, market operations and regulatory settings, particularly in relation to the implementation of rules into tools and processes.
• Capability working with technology, market system tools, modelling tools, operational processes and business integration activities.
• Experience developing technical advice, reports, business cases, submissions, consultations or policy recommendations.
• Ideally, advanced understanding of market system architecture, functionality and the interaction between market design, operational processes and supporting technology.
