The Science Laboratory Technician, reporting to the Learning Area Leader, provides specialised technical support and guidance to students and staff within the Science Domain at Auburn High School This role entails ensuring the safe and efficient handling of materials and equipment, along with administrative tasks to maintain compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations. You will be working with 1 other Lab tech across 2 buildings. Previous experience as a Laboratory Technician or in related role preferred. Familiarity with laboratory equipment and instructions. Profound knowledge of laboratory safety procedures, regulations, and best practices.### Responsibilities

  • General:
  • Prepare class practical materials for science classes promptly.
  • Collaborate with Science teaching staff to ascertain practical session requirements.
  • Conduct trial experiments to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Offer recommendations for enhancements based on observations and experience.
  • Prepare solutions, stains, media, and other materials for laboratory use.
  • Arrange materials for dissections and specialized experiments.
  • Perform specialist cleaning of laboratory equipment and work areas.
  • Provide technical advice to science teaching staff regarding curriculum components.
  • Assist with demonstrations and provide student instruction during experiments.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of materials, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Service, clean, and conduct basic repairs on laboratory apparatus.
  • Identify and remove unsafe equipment or materials from use.
  • Utilize departmental computers for accurate record-keeping, inventory tracking, and experiment management.
  • Safety:
  • Implement safe work practices in compliance with OHS legislation.
  • Advise and support Science teaching staff in safety matters and risk assessments.
  • Ensure safety equipment and supplies are well-maintained in science areas.
  • Manage the safe storage and disposal of biological residues.
  • Review and assess completed risk assessments.
  • Evaluate risks and develop control procedures for hazardous materials and processes.
  • Administration:
  • Establish and maintain effective systems for room, material, and equipment management.
  • Assist in securing science rooms and equipment.
  • Maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment and chemicals.
  • Update the Chemical Register and Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances manifest.
  • Manage labelling, storage, stocktaking, and ordering of equipment and chemicals.
  • Collaborate with the Learning Area Leader to facilitate expenditure and yearly subprogram budget submissions.
  • Complete purchase orders on 'Compass' for all lab and classroom purchases.
  • Coordinate with organizations and industries for equipment acquisition.
  • Foster collaboration with other campuses and schools to share resources.
  • Undertake additional duties as required by the Principal and Business Manager.
