Te Puni Kōkiri leads policy advice to the Government on Māori development, and Iwi and Māori relations with the Crown. To do this effectively we must position ourselves to elevate our monitoring and mentoring responsibilities and emphasise our role in holding other agencies to account for delivery of public services to, for and with Māori.

This role reports to the GM, People Capability and Culture. The People, Capability and Culture directorate develops strategic initiatives, provides change support, and delivers advice, policies and procedures that ensure Te Puni Kōkiri has the organisation, culture, and people capability to support delivery it’s strategy and the Government’s outcomes and priorities.

We’re looking for a Kaitohutohu Matua, Te Oranga me te Haumarutanga | Senior Advisor, Health, Safety and Wellbeing. This is a sole charge role for a deep, technical expert who will provide thought leadership, structure, policy and advice on health, safety and wellbeing, across the organisation. They will influence best practice health and safety and work to lift the capability of our organisation, with a particular focus on our regional offices. We are flexible on the location of this role – you could be based in our national office in Wellington, or in one of our regional offices.

Te whai wāhitanga | The opportunity

The Senior Advisor, Health, Safety, and Wellbeing will proactively manage and contribute to the development, review, and co-ordination of best practice health, safety and wellbeing frameworks and reporting.

You will work with leaders and key stakeholders across the organisation, both in our head office and in our regional offices, to develop an overarching framework for the Ministry and align our practices and reporting with industry best practice. You’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining relevant policies, procedures and guidance for both managers and kaimahi.

This is a national based role with an opportunity for strategic influence – you will work to lift capability and enable effective health and safety governance across the organisation by providing meaningful data, insights and effective oversight.

The likely appointment range is $105,100 - $128,454, based on skills and experience however we can be flexible for the right candidate. The full grade for this role is $105,100 - $140,132 with a mid-point of $116,777.

Mōu | About you

You will have a high level of technical knowledge and expertise in Health, Safety and Wellbeing, including an understanding of how organisations function and how best to lead, develop and embed initiatives. You will have very strong relationship management, consulting and influencing skills, to be able to bring people on the journey, build credibility quickly and lift capability. You’ll be comfortable with data and be able to develop reporting and dashboards, but you’ll also be able to provide insights from that data and make recommendations that drive us towards best practice health and safety as an organisation. This includes the ability to write papers, so strong communication skills are a must. You don’t need to have a public sector background but an understanding of health and safety governance is important.
