Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking a motivated Junior Electrical Design Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career engineer to develop their technical skills while working on innovative automation and manufacturing projects.

The successful candidate will support the design, development and delivery of electrical systems from initial concept through to manufacture, installation and commissioning. You will work closely with experienced electrical, mechanical, software and production engineers, gaining practical experience across the full project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design and development of electrical control systems for automated equipment and machinery.
  • Produce and update electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules and bills of materials.
  • Select suitable electrical components, including control devices, sensors, motors, drives, safety equipment and protection devices.
  • Support the design and specification of electrical control panels.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant electrical, machinery safety and company standards.
  • Work closely with mechanical design, software, production and commissioning teams to ensure systems operate effectively.
  • Provide technical support during panel building, machine assembly, testing and commissioning.
  • Assist with troubleshooting electrical design and installation issues.
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation and ensure design changes are properly recorded.
  • Liaise with suppliers to obtain technical information and assist with component selection.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments and project meetings.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering and production departments.
  • Attend customer sites when required to assist with installation, testing and commissioning.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree, diploma or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Automation Engineering or a related discipline.
  • A good understanding of electrical engineering principles and industrial control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities and work effectively within project deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • A willingness to learn and develop within the role.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience using electrical design software such as EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical or similar.
  • Knowledge of PLC-controlled machinery and industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with electrical control panels, motors, drives, sensors and safety circuits.
  • Understanding of relevant machinery and electrical standards.
  • Previous experience gained through an internship, apprenticeship, placement or manufacturing environment.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel when required.
