Job Description

Position Title: Journeyman Carpenter

LOCATION: Cambridge Bay, Nunavut

START DATE: ASAP

PURPOSE

The Journeyman Carpenter will carry out construction while working with a team of 3-8 people.

  • SCOPE

The Journeyman Carpenter will be responsible for the safe and efficient construction of projects. They will also ensure that accurate and timely information regarding supplies, tools and time are provided and recorded as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Journeyman Carpenter is required to:

  • operate as a team member in a cross cultural work environment.
  • follows all required safety procedures.
  • complete construction/renovation projects, and maintenance with a team of workers and apprentices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills & Knowledge:

· Determine specifications and calculate requirements

· Prepare layouts

· Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join moldings, wood materials, drywall and plastics materials

· Fit and install windows, doors, moldings and hardware

· Build floor beams and subflooring

· Drywall, Tape, Mud, and Painting

· Install various types of flooring including carpet, lino, laminate and hardwood

· Build exterior walls and interior partition walls

· Install counters and cabinets

· Build exterior/interior stairs and railings

· Valid driver’s license.

· Current first aid certificate (standard or emergency).

Education:

  • Journeyman Carpenter Certificate is required.
  • Red Seal Certificate would be preferred.

Experience:

  • Five years experience in the construction of residential housing.
  • Two years experience in Northern Construction
  • Two years experience supervising staff.
  • Five or more years experience reading construction drawings, and able to modify the designs where required, while keeping the construction standards to an equivalent or greater than the original design.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS

The successful candidate will be expected to work 10 hour shifts while on site, on a rotational basis of 6 weeks in and 2 weeks out, with the option of staying longer if preferred. Occupational Health and Safety is of major importance and all personnel are required to follow good work practices, completing tasks in a safe and orderly manner. Some heavy lifting may be required.
