Bobblehat is a growing commercial fit-out and bespoke joinery business based in Barnstaple.

We design, manufacture and install bespoke interiors for commercial clients across the UK, and we are now looking for a Joinery Apprentice to join our workshop team.

This is a genuine opportunity to learn a skilled trade while earning a full-time salary.

You do not need previous joinery experience. What matters to us is that you are practical, reliable, willing to learn and genuinely interested in building a long-term career in joinery.

You will work alongside experienced joiners in our Barnstaple workshop while completing a Level 2 Architectural Joinery Apprenticeship through Exeter College.

What the apprenticeship looks like

The apprenticeship runs for approximately 24 months.

For around three weeks each month, you will work with the Bobblehat team in our Barnstaple workshop.

Approximately one week each month will be spent at Exeter College on block release, Monday to Friday.

Your time at college is fully paid as part of your normal working week, and Bobblehat will cover agreed travel costs for attending college in Exeter.

We are deliberately paying above the normal apprentice rate. The starting salary is approximately £24,785 per year, based on a 37.5-hour week.

What you'll learn

You will gradually develop the practical skills needed to become a professional joiner, including:

• Reading and understanding drawings and specifications
• Setting out and marking out joinery
• Producing cutting lists
• Using hand and power tools safely
• Learning traditional woodworking joints
• Manufacturing and assembling bespoke joinery
• Fitting hinges, handles, locks, drawer runners and other ironmongery
• Learning to use fixed woodworking machinery
• Working with different timber, sheet materials and finishes
• Understanding workshop health and safety
• Quality checking your own work
• Working as part of a production team
• Developing the skills required to complete your Level 2 qualification

You won't be expected to know how to do all of this when you start. We will teach you.

What we will expect is that you listen, ask questions, take responsibility for learning and gradually become more capable and independent.

Who we're looking for

We're looking for someone who:

• genuinely wants to learn joinery and develop it into a career
• enjoys practical, hands-on work
• is reliable and turns up on time
• has a good attitude and is willing to learn from experienced people
• pays attention to detail
• is comfortable working as part of a team
• understands the importance of working safely
• is willing to attend Exeter College for block-release training
• is prepared to work hard and take their apprenticeship seriously

You may be leaving school or college, looking for your first proper career opportunity, or simply looking to move into a skilled trade.

Previous joinery experience is not required.

Ideally, you will have GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above, but this is not essential and can be discussed with Exeter College.

Getting to work and college

Our workshop is based in Barnstaple and is accessible by public transport.

You will need to be able to travel reliably to Barnstaple for work.

Having a driving licence would be useful and is preferred, particularly as your career develops, but it is not essential for the apprenticeship.

For your college block-release weeks, you can travel from Barnstaple to Exeter by train, and Bobblehat will cover agreed college travel costs.

Where could this lead?

We aren't looking for someone simply to complete an apprenticeship and leave.

We want to develop someone who can become part of the Bobblehat team for the long term.

Your development would broadly progress from:

Apprentice Joiner → Junior / Improver Joiner → Skilled Joiner

As you develop, there could also be opportunities to specialise in areas such as:

• bespoke commercial joinery
• workshop machining
• CNC production
• site installation
• production
• team leadership and supervision

Your progress will depend on your attitude, ability and the direction you want your career to take.
