Health & Safety Advisor
Job Description

Be visible. Build trust. Make safety work where it matters most: on site.

We are looking for a practical and experienced Health \& Safety Advisor to work alongside our project teams, supervisors and frontline crews.

This is a genuinely site-based role. You will spend most of your time out in the field, understanding how work is being carried out, engaging with our people and providing real-time advice and coaching. It is well suited to someone who enjoys being close to the work and influencing safer outcomes through practical support, not simply producing documentation from an office.

Reporting to the Health \& Safety Manager, you will help ensure critical risks are understood, effective controls are in place and lessons from incidents and site observations are embedded across the project. This is a fixed term role until 2029. Relocation support on offer.

What you’ll be doing

  • Maintaining a strong, visible health and safety presence across the project
  • Undertaking regular site visits focused on critical risks and active work
  • Engaging directly with frontline workers, supervisors and project leaders
  • Providing practical, real-time coaching on risk controls and safe work practices
  • Leading or supporting ICAM investigations for high-actual and high-potential incidents
  • Reviewing incident notifications and supporting appropriate escalation
  • Completing inspections, assurance activities and critical control observations
  • Identifying emerging or systemic risks and escalating these when required
  • Supporting corrective-action close-out and sharing lessons across the project
  • Facilitating toolbox talks, learning reviews and targeted field-based training
  • Supporting audit preparation and the close-out of audit findings
  • Strengthening ownership of health and safety across operational teams and subcontractors

About you

You will be credible and comfortable in an active construction environment. You know how to build relationships with site teams, ask the right questions and challenge positively when something needs to change.

You will bring:

  • A health and safety qualification at NZQA Level 4 or above
  • Experience leading or supporting incident investigations, ideally using ICAM
  • Experience undertaking site-based health and safety assurance and engagement
  • A sound understanding of New Zealand health and safety legislation and risk-management practices
  • The confidence to coach and influence frontline leaders and crews
  • Strong written skills, particularly for investigation and assurance reporting
  • Practical knowledge of critical-risk management
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills
  • The ability to work effectively in a dynamic, site-based environment

Experience in civil construction or infrastructure would be advantageous, as would a Level 6 Health and Safety Diploma or higher qualification.
