Are you an experienced and versatile full stack developer who’s passionate about technology and design? Are you interested in contributing beyond writing code, and participating in UX/UI? Are you a true team player with strong social and soft skills? Then this is the job for you. As a Full Stack Developer at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), you’ll ensure that the front-end UX is slick and optimized for speed, scalability, and usability.

Why join the NFB? It is the only institution of its kind in the world that produces and distributes auteur animation, documentaries in every form, and interactive work, for both Canadian and international audiences. Our primary means of sharing this creative wealth is the NFB.ca website and the NFB Films app. And to do this, we need a team that truly reflects the richness and diversity of Canada. If you’d like to be a part of this team—and part of the NFB’s incredible legacy—we’d love to hear from you.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY:

  • Join the NFB Platforms team as a Full Stack Developer in a permanent, full-time position (37.5 hours per week). You’ll earn a salary in the range of $83,472 to $105,682, plus enjoy a variety of employee benefits—including medical and dental coverage, a government pension plan, and a competitive paid-leave schedule.
  • Enjoy working mostly remotely and, on occasion, in the NFB office space in downtown Montreal, located in the dynamic and arts-centric Quartier des Spectacles, where we’re surrounded, inside and outside, by creators, producers and media professionals.
  • Immerse yourself in an exciting mandate: combine the art of design with the art of programming in the creation of NFB corporate digital products, including websites, apps and more (i.e., NFB Films app, NFB.ca).
  • Access to training budgets to keep up with the latest trends related to upcoming projects, in an environment that encourages and supports continuous learning.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the NFB’s digital products by embracing the following mandate:
  • Participates in the definition of front-end architecture, including component structure, state management and development tooling, in collaboration with UX designers and other developers.
  • Assists in the design, programming, testing, implementation and maintenance of software solutions (interfaces, applications, web services, APIs), in collaboration with team members and internal and external partners.
  • Participates in feasibility analysis of projects and proposes innovative solutions alongside the Digital Platforms team.
  • Collaborates in project planning and follow-up to implement developed solutions.
  • Participates in peer code review, based on team programming standards, to ensure the quality of applications under development.
  • Contributes to test scenario development (unit, integration, end-to-end) and promotes the application of test-driven development (TDD) practices.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of test and development environments and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Stays up to date on new front-end trends and tools, and actively participates in discussions about adopting them at the NFB.
  • Applies AGILE methodology: daily stand-ups, planning, retrospectives, demos, etc.

ABOUT YOU:

You are an open-minded, motivated individual with a passion for digital technologies. You are equally interested in innovation itself and in the tangible ways it enhances the user experience, whether on the web or mobile platforms.

Collaborating with colleagues from diverse professional backgrounds energizes you. You value a variety of perspectives, enjoy sharing your ideas, and contribute to a positive, inclusive, and respectful work environment. You know how to keep a sense of humor and approach challenges with a light touch, while remaining disciplined and committed when it is time to deliver results.

Self-reliant and proactive, you are able to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously and take sound decisions independently. You communicate with ease and thrive in an environment where discussions about architecture and user experience occasionally coexist with well-timed GIFs, a few memes, and surprisingly passionate debates about raccoon trapping.

Also, you possess:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline (Web Design and Development, Software Engineering, Computer Science), or equivalent experience;
  • Minimum three (3) years of relevant front-end/full-stack web-development experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • Solid experience in the design, development, maintenance, and optimization of dynamic, accessible, and high-performance frontend interfaces, in accordance with UX principles and established technical standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of HTML5, CSS/SASS, JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript;
  • Thorough knowledge of Web Components; experience with the Lit library;
  • Experience with Redux (or another state management library) in front-end applications;
  • Good knowledge of a modern front-end framework such as Vue.js is an asset (used in select sub-applications);
  • Good knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and cross-browser/responsive design practices;
  • Good knowledge of front-end build tooling (Webpack, Vite) and package management (Yarn/npm);
  • Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs to separate front-end and back-end responsibilities;
  • Very good knowledge of Git and Git workflows (code reviews, branching strategies) and repository management (GitLab/GitHub);
  • Experience with front-end testing tools (e.g., Jest, Cypress, Playwright) and an interest in TDD practices;
  • Experience with container technologies (Docker) for local development, packaging and troubleshooting containerized environments;
  • Knowledge of Python and a back-end web framework (Django, Flask);
  • Familiarity with Elasticsearch and task queues such as Celery;
  • Understanding of software architecture principles for building stable, maintainable applications without over-engineering;
  • Bilingualism in French and English, spoken and written.

If you are interested in this position and have the qualifications above, we invite you to apply by September 28, 2026.

The NFB is committed to building a skilled, diverse workforce that’s reflective of Canadian society. It promotes initiatives such as employment equity and encourages candidates to voluntarily indicate in their cover letter if they are a woman, a member of a First Nation, Inuk, Métis, a person with a disability or a member of a visible-minority group.

The NFB is also committed to developing inclusive, barrier-free selection processes and work environments. Feel free to advise us of any accommodation needs.

Please note that only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.
