Transpower’s purpose is to empower the energy future for New Zealand — a future that delivers a net-zero carbon economy and a reliable, secure electricity system.

At the forefront of the energy sector, Transpower owns and operates the national electricity transmission system and also fulfils the System Operator role. Our work underpins how electricity flows across Aotearoa — powering homes, businesses and communities.

Role context

This role sits within the Application Services team in our Information Services and Technology (ICT) division and supports the financial and commercial management of a portfolio of nationally significant enterprise and critical applications.

Application Services manages Transpower’s inventory of applications and integrations, including critical and enterprise application portfolios across market systems, transmission applications, core finance, asset management, information management and HR systems.

The team focuses on the practical, cost-effective integration and lifecycle management of systems that support business requirements — including application acquisition or development, enhancements, problem resolution and continuous improvement.

As Financial Analyst, you’ll support sound decision-making, robust financial management and improved commercial visibility across Application Services. You’ll play a key role in ensuring financial information, forecasts, commentary, contract records and process documentation are accurate, timely and fit for purpose.

About the team

The Application Services team sits within our ICT division and works closely with Strategy and Architecture, delivery teams, vendors and business stakeholders to ensure systems are delivered and managed in accordance with enterprise standards.

The portfolio includes systems that are critical to the operation of New Zealand’s electricity system and Transpower’s broader business operations. This creates a varied and commercially active environment, where financial discipline, vendor oversight and clear reporting are essential.

Our ICT division has been recognised with a 2024 Red Hat Innovation Award for modernising New Zealand’s wholesale electricity market systems — reflecting the scale, complexity and national significance of the work we deliver. (https://www.transpower.co.nz/news)

The opportunity

As Financial Analyst – critical IT services, you’ll be responsible for delivering quality financial analysis, reporting and forecasting, while providing practical commercial support across a large and complex application portfolio.

This is a finance-led role with meaningful exposure to vendor contracts and procurement processes. You won’t need to be a procurement specialist, but you will bring — or be able to quickly develop — sound commercial judgement and confidence working with vendor contract information.

We are seeking confidence working with financial data, and the ability to support leaders with accurate information, clear advice and well-managed processes.

The work you’ll be involved in includes:

  • Prepare and coordinate monthly financial reporting, analysis, variance commentary and year-end forecast implications across Application Services
  • Work with cost centre managers and Finance to ensure actuals, forecasts, budgets and expenditure are accurate, timely and clearly explained
  • Coordinate the Application Services annual budget process, while maintaining accurate financial records, forecasting tools and reporting documentation
  • Contribute to improved financial maturity, process consistency and standardisation across ICT
  • Maintain visibility of Application Services vendor contracts, renewals, key dates, obligations and related system records
  • Support contract extensions, renewals, procurement activity, approval papers and commercial documentation
  • Provide practical commercial guidance to managers and work with Procurement, Legal and vendors to progress contract activity
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial and commercial management processes

What will you bring?

You’ll bring strong financial capability and experience supporting financial management in a complex environment, ideally within ICT, technology, infrastructure, utilities or another commercially active setting.

You’ll also bring strong analytical capability, including advanced Excel skills and confidence working with detailed source data. Accuracy, attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to see both the detail and the bigger picture will be important.

We’re looking for someone who can build effective relationships across teams, manage competing priorities with a high degree of independence, and contribute to continuous improvement in how financial and commercial processes are documented and managed.

Whilst you do not need to be a procurement specialist, you will need to be comfortable supporting vendor contract management, renewals, procurement documentation and commercial discussions. Therefore, experience working with contracts, vendor arrangements or procurement processes would be valuable.

Why join Transpower?

This is an opportunity to work at the centre of systems that are critical to New Zealand’s electricity network.

You’ll contribute to how key ICT services are managed and supported — helping ensure financial discipline, commercial visibility and effective vendor partnerships.

You’ll be part of a collaborative, delivery-focused team working on meaningful and nationally significant systems.
