• About the Position

Hyperion Materials \& Technologies is looking for an experienced Field Application Engineer to provide technical and application expertise for its Rotary Cutting business in Japan and across APAC.

You will act as a key technical connection between customers and Hyperion's engineering organization, supporting everything from customer requirements and product development through to commissioning, troubleshooting, production testing, and operator training.

Rather than being limited to desk-based engineering, this position will put you directly at customer production sites where you can understand manufacturing challenges, diagnose technical issues, and develop practical solutions.

You will work independently in Japan while collaborating closely with customers and internal engineering, production, quality, sales, and R\&D teams across APAC and Europe.

❔ What Will You Do?

Customer \& Field Engineering

• Lead technical support for customers, including commissioning, troubleshooting, and operator training.
• Visit customer production sites to understand their manufacturing processes and how Hyperion's tools interact with their production environment.
• Diagnose technical problems and recommend appropriate solutions and corrective actions.
• Conduct customer material analysis where required.
• Support the successful commissioning and operation of tools supplied to customers.
• Provide field application expertise to customers and internal teams throughout Japan and APAC.

Application \& Product Engineering

• Analyze customer specifications and collect the technical information required to develop new products.
• Collaborate with design engineers to create tools and systems that meet customer requirements while optimizing performance and cost.
• Read and interpret industrial drawings and technical specifications.
• Participate in technical and risk analysis for new products and high-risk projects.
• Organize and participate in project kick-off, technical review, and production launch meetings.
• Contribute field expertise to design standards for rotary knives, stations, anvils, and related systems.
• Provide technical support to re-sharpening centers.

Quality, R\&D \& Continuous Improvement

• Support investigations into product and quality issues and propose appropriate corrective actions.
• Follow and evaluate production tests and trials.
• Participate in R\&D projects as either a project leader or technical team member.
• Monitor technical and industry developments to identify opportunities for innovation.
• Communicate customer feedback and field knowledge to engineering, production, quality, and commercial teams.

Training \& Technical Documentation

• Develop and deliver technical training for both customers and internal teams.
• Maintain accurate product and technical documentation within the company's PDM system.
• Support the development and continuous improvement of technical documentation, processes, and engineering best practices.

• What Skills \& Experience Do You Need?

• Master's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

• 10+ years of relevant professional experience in mechanical engineering, industrial machinery, manufacturing equipment, cutting tools, field applications, or a related technical environment.
• Strong mechanical and technical problem-solving capabilities.
• Experience providing customer-facing technical support, such as commissioning, troubleshooting, production support, or technical training.
• Ability to read and understand industrial technical drawings.
• Strong customer orientation and the ability to translate customer production requirements into technical solutions.
• Native-level Japanese.
• Business-level English for communication with international teams and stakeholders.
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Able to work effectively with engineering, production, quality, sales, and other teams across different countries and functions.
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
• Proactive approach to problem-solving and information gathering.
• Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of technical decisions in the field.

✈️ Travel \& Working Style

This is a highly customer-facing field engineering position requiring significant business travel.

• Approximately 50–60% business travel
• Customer visits throughout Japan and APAC
• Travel to France approximately once per quarter
• High level of autonomy while travelling and supporting customer sites
• Hybrid working arrangement: when not travelling, employees are expected to work from the office
• Working hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM JST

Candidates should therefore be comfortable with frequent domestic and international travel as a regular part of the position.

• Compensation

Annual Salary: ¥9,000,000 – ¥11,500,000

Short-Term Incentive (STI): Up to ¥1,500,000

The STI is an annual performance-based incentive program. The actual payout is not guaranteed and is determined based on a combination of individual performance, business performance, and overall company results during the applicable performance year.

STI eligibility and payment are subject to company policy and applicable employment terms. Further details regarding performance targets and payout opportunities will be discussed during the offer stage.
