The Opportunity

The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is one of the flagship programs of Banff Centre. As one of the world’s pre-eminent mountain festivals – and a co-founder of the International Alliance for Mountain Film — the Festival began almost 50 years ago in the small Rocky Mountain town of Banff, Alberta. What began as a one-day festival of climbing films has now blossomed into a nine-day event in Banff that explores and celebrates what Mountain Culture means to people around the world. Events include film screenings; film, book, and photography competitions; a filmmaking workshop and mountain marketplace.

The Mountain Culture department at Banff Centre is looking for a Festival Coordinator to assist in the coordination and implementation of the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival's volunteer program. Reliable, self-motivated, and highly organized while remaining flexible to changing priorities, the Festival Coordinator demonstrates strong written and oral communication abilities and excellent interpersonal skills when dealing with all stakeholders, partners, and guests.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Festival Manager, below are some key accountabilities:

• Assesses program needs, recruits volunteers, and prepares volunteer reschedules.
• Assists marketing and festival management with the recruiting of festival volunteers.
• Develops volunteer information packages, handbook and training, and arranges the volunteer orientation session.
• Communicates to and coordinates with Banff Centre departments for the set-up and ongoing logistical requirements of the volunteer program.
• Researches best practices in volunteer administration and acts as advisor to the Mountain Culture team in area of volunteer administration.
• Provides input to database design additions and changes for volunteer management, e.g., addition of fields, standardization of data entry rules etc.
• Assists in post-festival follow-up including preparation of the annual volunteer report.
• As part of the festival team, troubleshoots for guests, media, sponsors, volunteers and exhibitors as necessary.
• The position assists the Director, Festival \& Tour, and Festival Manager in all areas of festival administration and coordination.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

• Completion of a university degree within a related discipline
• 3+ years’ experience working on an administrative/events coordination capacity
• Strong financial, budgetary and reporting skills
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and databases. Web and social media experience required
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Strong interpersonal skills; ability to seek collaborative solutions, to persuade others, lead by example and communicate effectively while working cohesively in a dynamic team
• High level of commitment to customer service
• Ability to work effectively under pressure, with shifting priorities
• Ability to manage multiple projects at once with appropriate attention to detail
• Demonstrated creative thinker within an artistic environment where flexible solutions are often required.
• High level of reliability and motivation
• Knowledge of Banff Centre, the BCMFBF and the outdoor industry is an asset.

Special Requirements

• Due to the nature of the Festival programming, this position may be required to work an irregular schedule including evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Employment Terms and Benefits

• In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probationary period.
• This is a term position from June - November 2026
• This position is part time from June - September and increases to full-time in October through November.
• This position pays $22.08 - $23.19 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a rotating schedule.
