Job Description: Fabricators/Fitters (Structural and Pipe)

Job Overview

Fabricators and Fitters in structural and pipe disciplines are essential skilled tradespeople in industrial construction, manufacturing, and maintenance. They are responsible for assembling, installing, and fabricating metal components and piping systems according to engineering specifications and technical drawings. These roles are critical in industries such as oil and gas, construction, shipbuilding, and offshore fabrication .

Key Responsibilities

Blueprint Reading and Layout

  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, isometric drawings (ISOs), and P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams) to determine layout, material requirements, and assembly sequences
  • Perform mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and angles to determine precise measurements
  • Mark cutting lines on workpieces, checking for material thickness, welding shrinkage, and other component specifications

Fitting and Fabrication

  • Measure, cut, fit, and shape steel pipe, plate, and structural components (beams, columns, braces) using hand and power tools including saws, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and pipe benders
  • Align and fit components using welding, bolting, and riveting techniques to ensure proper alignment and structural integrity
  • Straighten warped or bent parts using sledges, hand torches, and straightening procedures
  • Fabricate and install pipe supports, temporary support structures, and other components as needed

Assembly and Installation

  • Assemble and install piping systems and structural steel components for various structures including buildings, bridges, offshore jackets, decks, and production facilities
  • Layout and install piping, equipment, and mechanical systems in compliance with construction drawings and specifications
  • Verify spool dimensions and perform system walk-downs to validate proper installation

Quality Control and Testing

  • Inspect and test completed work to ensure quality standards are met; make necessary adjustments
  • Verify dimensions and alignments using levels, squares, and other measuring tools
  • Conduct hydro-testing and reinstate systems

Collaboration and Safety

  • Collaborate with welders, crane operators, engineers, and other team members to coordinate workflow and ensure efficient project execution
  • Adhere to safety protocols, OSHA safety rules, and company health and safety policies; maintain a safe working environment
  • Prepare detailed reports documenting work performed and materials used
  • Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and safety processes
