Is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling all engineering, infrastructure support, maintenance, and utility services within the hospital. The role ensures the safe, reliable, and uninterrupted operation of hospital facilities, medical utility systems, engineering equipment, and building services while maintaining compliance with statutory regulations, safety standards, and healthcare accreditation requirements. The incumbent is responsible for preventive maintenance, energy management, project execution, vendor management, emergency preparedness, and continuous improvement of engineering services.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Department Leadership and Administration
- Lead and manage the Engineering and Maintenance Department to ensure efficient and uninterrupted hospital operations.
- Develop departmental goals, annual maintenance plans, budgets, and performance indicators.
- Allocate work, supervise engineering staff, and monitor departmental performance.
- Establish and periodically review departmental policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and maintenance protocols.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and customer service.
2. Maintenance of Hospital Infrastructure
- Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of hospital buildings, structures, utilities, and engineering systems.
- Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs.
- Monitor the condition of hospital infrastructure and initiate timely repairs and upgrades.
- Maintain operation of all non-clinical engineering assets to minimize downtime.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with clinical and administrative departments to avoid disruption of patient care.
3. Operation and Maintenance of Engineering Systems
Oversee the safe operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of:
- Electrical distribution systems.
- Diesel generators and automatic transfer systems.
- Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems.
- HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems.
- Medical gas pipeline infrastructure (in coordination with authorized personnel).
- Plumbing and water supply systems.
- Water storage and pumping systems.
- Sewage treatment plants (STP) and effluent treatment plants (ETP), where applicable.
- Fire detection, fire alarm, and firefighting systems.
- Elevators, escalators, and lifting equipment.
- Building Management Systems (BMS), if installed.
- Lighting systems and emergency lighting.
- Boilers, steam systems, and hot water generation equipment, where applicable.
- Compressed air and vacuum utility systems serving hospital infrastructure.
4. Preventive and Corrective Maintenance
- Develop annual preventive maintenance schedules for all engineering equipment and utilities.
- Ensure timely completion of scheduled maintenance activities.
- Respond promptly to engineering breakdowns and emergency maintenance requests.
- Maintain maintenance logs, inspection records, calibration certificates (where applicable), and service documentation.
- Analyze recurring equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
5. Utility Management
- Monitor uninterrupted availability of:
- Electrical power.
- Water supply.
- HVAC services.
- Medical utility support systems.
- Backup power systems.
- Optimize utility consumption while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
- Implement energy conservation and sustainability initiatives.
6. Engineering Projects and Capital Works
- Plan and supervise renovation, expansion, and infrastructure improvement projects.
- Coordinate with architects, consultants, contractors, and hospital management.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, and technical submissions.
- Ensure projects comply with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and hospital operational requirements.
- Monitor project schedules, quality, budgets, and completion timelines.
7. Vendor and Contract Management
- Identify, evaluate, and manage engineering contractors and service providers.
- Monitor performance of Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) and Comprehensive Maintenance Contract (CMC) vendors.
- Verify contractor compliance with hospital safety policies and contractual obligations.
- Review service reports, invoices, and contract renewals.
- Ensure vendor services meet agreed service-level requirements.
8. Safety and Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable engineering, electrical, fire safety, environmental, occupational health, and building regulations.
- Support compliance with healthcare accreditation standards such as NABH, JCI, or other applicable requirements.
- Coordinate statutory inspections and certification of engineering systems.
- Maintain records required for regulatory authorities and accreditation surveys.
- Participate in internal and external audits.
9. Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Management
- Maintain emergency response plans for utility failures and engineering emergencies.
- Coordinate restoration of essential services during power failures, equipment breakdowns, fire incidents, floods, or natural disasters.
- Participate in disaster management planning and mock drills.
- Ensure emergency generators and backup systems remain operational at all times.
- Support Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) activities where implemented.
10. Infection Prevention and Environmental Support
- Coordinate engineering activities to support infection prevention requirements.
- Maintain HVAC systems serving operating theatres, ICUs, isolation rooms, laboratories, and sterile processing areas according to hospital standards.
- Ensure water quality systems are maintained to reduce infection risks.
- Coordinate engineering support during infection outbreaks and renovation projects.
11. Equipment and Asset Management
- Maintain an inventory of engineering equipment and fixed assets.
- Monitor equipment lifecycle and recommend replacement or upgrades.
- Develop asset replacement plans and capital expenditure proposals.
- Ensure proper documentation of engineering assets.
12. Budgeting and Cost Control
- Prepare annual engineering budgets.
- Monitor departmental expenditures and maintenance costs.
- Optimize maintenance costs without compromising safety or quality.
- Evaluate cost-effective engineering solutions and energy-saving opportunities.
13. Documentation and Record Management
- Maintain comprehensive records of:
- Preventive maintenance.

Experience
- Minimum 8–12 years of progressive experience in engineering and maintenance, including at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
- Experience in a corporate hospital, tertiary care hospital, or healthcare facility is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in managing hospital utilities, infrastructure projects, statutory compliance, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
