What you will do

The Design Branch is seeking individuals to join the team in the following roles:

Bridge Maintenance, Highway Design, and Hydraulics Design working in Fredericton, NB. This is intermediate level professional engineering work as a member of a team of technical professionals providing expertise for the efficient and effective management of GNB’s inventory of transportation infrastructure.

Intermediate Bridge Maintenance Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Bridge Maintenance Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Completing structural analysis and preparing designs for repair, rehabilitation or replacement of highway bridges, large culverts, seawalls, retaining walls and related transportation structures in accordance with the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code guidelines, applicable environmental requirements and NBDTI internal standards. working with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • preparing tender documents, particular specifications, plans, quantity calculations and cost estimates;
  • providing engineering support during construction, including review of shop drawings and field changes ensuring work complies with applicable codes, standards and safety standards;
  • managing related consultant activities, including tracking of expenditures;
  • participating in the review of inspection data of the province’s transportation structure inventory, including evaluation of damage and determination of necessary repairs;
  • providing leadership, guidance, and support to employees, while ensuring effective teamwork and performance;
  • participating in the development of standard specifications, internal manuals and other related documents;
  • providing input, guidance, technical support and recommendations to regional bridge maintenance personnel and others regarding transportation structure maintenance/repair designs;
  • providing technical guidance/input during emergency events.

Intermediate Highway Design Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Highway Design Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Management and completion of Geometric design of highway grading \& related projects in accordance with Transportation Association of Canada guidelines, applicable environmental requirements and NBDTI internal standards, working with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • preparing tender documents, particular specifications, plans, quantity calculations and cost estimates;
  • managing related consultant activities, including tracking of expenditures;
  • reviewing highway designs and other related reports, providing input and recommendations as appropriate;
  • participating in the development of standard specifications, internal policies and other related documents;
  • supporting the development and management of capital and ordinary budgets;
  • providing leadership, guidance, and support to employees, while ensuring effective teamwork and performance;
  • providing geometric design guidance, recommendations and technical support for bridge, culvert and other transportation related projects.

Intermediate Hydraulics Design Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Hydraulics Design Engineer, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • management and completion of culvert replacement/rehabilitation \& related projects in accordance with applicable environmental requirements and NBDTI internal standards, working with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • preparing tender documents, particular specifications, plans, quantity calculations and cost estimates;
  • managing related consultant activities, including tracking of expenditures;
  • preparing/reviewing culvert/hydraulic design and other related reports, providing input and recommendations as appropriate;
  • contributing to the development of internal specifications, guidelines, policies and other related documents;
  • supporting the development and management of capital and ordinary budgets;
  • providing leadership, guidance, and support to employees, while ensuring effective teamwork and performance.

Work environment:

  • Office location: 440 King Street, Fredericton.
  • Open office layout.
  • Standard hours of work: Monday – Friday.

  • Some travel within the province will be required
  • Remote work arrangements within New Brunswick may be considered.

Essential Qualifications:

Intermediate Engineer:

  • University degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related experience.
  • At least three (3) years of supervisory experience.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick or an equivalent governing body recognized in Canada.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license as issued by the Province of New Brunswick.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Written and spoken competence in English is required. Please state your language capability.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates that demonstrate the following assets:

  • education specializing in the specified expertise.
  • experience in the preparation of project tenders.
  • familiarity with the application of NBDTI Standard Specifications \& Guidelines.

Intermediate Bridge Maintenance Engineer -

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related structural engineering analysis and bridge design experience.
  • Experience with the application of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code and Commentary.
  • engineering experience related to the design of new bridges and/or bridge rehabilitation projects.
  • experience with load capacity evaluations under relevant design codes.
  • experience related to the inspection of bridges and identification of required maintenance/repairs.
  • experience related to the maintenance/repair of bridge and other related transportation structures.

Intermediate Highway Design Engineer:

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related highway design experience
  • Experience with the application of the Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guide and other related documents.

Intermediate Hydraulics Design Engineer:

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of related hydrological design experience
  • experience using PCSWMM and HECRAS;
  • education or experience relating to hydraulic design in freshwater and/or marine environments;
  • experience involving a variety of culvert types;
  • experience in transportation structure inspection, including identification and/or completion of required maintenance and repairs;
  • experience in applying the TAC Guide to Bridge Hydraulics.

Subject to the response to this competition, candidates may be required to demonstrate on their application one or more of the asset qualifications in addition to the essential qualifications in order to be given further consideration.

SALARY:

Engineer 3: $2,962.97 to $4,055.53 bi-weekly, based on a 36.25 hours per week.

Based on Operational Requirements, hours may be designated to:

  • 40 hours per week ($3,269.48 to $4,475.07 bi-weekly) or
  • 45 hours per week ($3,678.17 to $5,034.45 bi-weekly)

Recognition and Retention Premium

The recognition and retention premium is based on written confirmation of recognition and registration with a Canadian Regulatory body.

  • Fifteen (15) years but less than twenty (20) years – 1.0%
  • Twenty (20) years but less than twenty-five (25) years – 2.0%
  • Twenty-five (25) years – 3.0%
