Database Administrator (Microsoft SQL Server & PostgreSQL)

JOB TITLE: Database Administrator (Microsoft SQL Server \& PostgreSQL)

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for a Database Administrator to run our Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases. These databases support production

platforms, so the role covers high availability, disaster recovery, backups, performance tuning and data integration (ETL) across

production and non-production environments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Microsoft SQL Server

- Install, configure, patch and upgrade SQL Server instances.

- Configure and maintain Always On Availability Groups and Failover Clustering.

- Design and run backup and recovery, including point-in-time recovery.

- Apply security controls: access management, encryption (TDE) and auditing.

T-SQL

- Review and optimise stored procedures, functions, views and triggers.

- Review and improve the T-SQL written by application teams.

- Support schema changes, indexing strategy and data model reviews.

- Troubleshoot deadlocks, blocking and long-running transactions.

Performance Tuning

- Analyse and tune slow queries using execution plans, Query Store,

Extended Events and SQL Profiler.

- Design and maintain indexes, statistics and partitioning.

- Investigate wait statistics, blocking, tempdb contention and I/O bottlenecks.

- Do capacity planning and act on growth trends.

- On PostgreSQL: use EXPLAIN (ANALYZE), pg_stat_statements, autovacuum tuning and memory parameters.

ETL and Data Integration

- Build and maintain SSIS packages and data integration jobs.

- Schedule, monitor and troubleshoot ETL jobs and SQL Server Agent jobs.

- Support data migration between systems and environments.

- Make sure data loads are reliable, with error handling and reprocessing.

PostgreSQL

- Install, configure and upgrade PostgreSQL on Linux.

- Set up and maintain streaming replication and high availability (Patroni or an equivalent).

- Run backup and point-in-time recovery using pgBackRest or Barman.

- Write and tune PL/pgSQL functions.

- Manage connection pooling (PgBouncer) and authentication (pg_hba.conf).

Operations

- Provide day-to-day support: incidents, service requests and change requests.

- Do root cause analysis and write postmortems for major incidents.

- Automate routine database work (Ansible, PowerShell or shell scripting).

- Set up monitoring and alerting.

- Run disaster recovery tests and keep documentation current.

- Take part in an on-call rotation for production systems.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or similar.

- 1-4+ years of hands-on database administration.

- Strong Microsoft SQL Server: Always On, backup and recovery.

- Strong performance tuning: execution plans, indexing and wait statistics.

- Strong T-SQL: stored procedures, functions and query optimisation.

- Hands-on ETL experience with SSIS or a similar tool.

- Hands-on PostgreSQL: replication, backup and recovery, tuning.

- Linux administration.

- Scripting: PowerShell, Bash or Python.

- Experience supporting production systems, including out-of-hours work.

PREFERRED (NICE TO HAVE)

- Databases running on Kubernetes or OpenShift (CloudNativePG, Crunchy, or a similar operator).

- Automation with Ansible.

- Monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana.

- Oracle or MySQL experience.

- Certifications: Microsoft (DP-300), Red Hat (RHCSA), or PostgreSQL certification.

- Experience in government or banking environments, including NCA compliance.

Pay: ﷼6,700.00 - ﷼22,000.00 per month
