The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board invites applications from external candidates for the position of Focus on Youth Mentor.

The successful student will be based out of or St. Peter Catholic Secondary School in Peterborough and should be able to drive to all 4 geographics. They, will assist in the Student Success department for Continuing Education/Summer School programs with preparations for the Focus on Youth program and mentoring students in the program as well as, administrative duties that include but are not limited to - answering phone queries, calling students and/or parents, assisting the assigned principals, secretary, and teachers, etc.

The purpose of the Focus on Youth program is to hire and support students who experience socioeconomic disadvantages or other barriers to success. With Focus on Youth students will have the opportunity to earn up to two (2) co-op credits while being paid to work. During the in person training students will earn certifications and will complete the pre placement cooperative education activities. Your role will be to support and mentor the students.

Frequent travel within the Board will be a necessity as the Focus on Youth Mentor will be meeting with FOY students at their places of employment (PVNC Schools, Junior Achievement Peterborough, Community Daycares). Mileage expenses may be claimed for the duration of the assignment in accordance with Board Policies

Rate of Pay:

$20 per hour

Requirements:

  • The successful candidate will assist the Cooperative Education teacher and the Board Mental Health Lead who are working with the Focus on Youth students from PVNC to develop the following:
  • Leadership skills;
  • Employment standards, employee rights and responsibilities;
  • Job search skills (e.g., searches, applications, interviews);
  • Job performance skills (e.g., customer service, team work, communication, time management, problem-solving, conflict resolution, appropriate work clothing);
  • Life skills (e.g., financial management, civic engagement);
  • Mental Health Awareness;
  • Transition supports (e.g., resume/portfolio building, career planning, applying for employment/education/training opportunities);
  • Other training required by board policies and/or workplace related legislation (e.g., WHMIS, workplace health and safety); and
  • Additional training or learning components tailored to the needs of the student hires, including certification (e.g., CPR, etc.).

  • Communication Skills: required to contact students, teacher, parents and employers involved with the Focus on Youth summer program;

  • Computer Skills: will be working with Microsoft Office programs, school software programs, website development, and data entry;
  • Organization Skills: required to organize tutoring of students and be able to assist in office administration through filing and ordering of materials;
  • Personal and Team skills: required to work both independently and as part of a team through a variety of activities;
  • Mentoring Support: to help monitor programming at the various program sites. The successful candidate must be committed to getting to know the student hires, developing trusting relationships, and fostering caring and safe spaces for students.
  • Student Recognition: the successful candidate will organize the formal recognition ceremonies to celebrate successful program completion and student achievement through FOY program (e.g., certificate of completion, graduation ceremony).
  • FOY Student Surveys: the successful candidate will help to ensure that all FOY participants from PVNC complete the ministry required pre and post surveys through an online survey platform.
  • Candidate must be a resident of Ontario;
  • Candidate must be eligible to work in Canada.
  • Candidate must have a valid Ontario driver's license and access to a vehicle.
