YMCA Taranaki is looking for a reliable, caring, and community-minded person to join our team in a unique role supporting two important services in New Plymouth.

Working across both our YMCA Education programmes and Te Whare o Tapatahi Rough Sleeping Shelter, you'll play a vital role in helping people access the support they need while ensuring they are treated with dignity, respect, and care.

This position combines youth transport services with the safe management of whānau belongings and community support activities. We are also open to flexible arrangements if applicants can only undertake part of the role.

About the Role \| Mō te Tūranga

As our Community Transport \& Whānau Support Driver, you will:

YMCA Education

• Safely transport rangatahi to and from YMCA Education programmes.
• Create a welcoming and respectful environment for young people.
• Support attendance and engagement through reliable transport services.
• Maintain a high standard of safety and professionalism.

Te Whare o Tapatahi Rough Sleeping Shelter

• Safely uplift, store, and return whānau belongings with dignity and respect.
• Drive the YMCA van for shelter-related activities.
• Support the smooth operation of daily shelter services.
• Complete basic record-keeping and reporting requirements.
• Ensure YMCA vehicles are maintained, checked, and kept safe.

Hours of Work

The role combines hours across both services and is expected to total approximately 22-28 hours per week.

Typical hours include:

YMCA Education (Term Time)

• Monday to Thursday
• 7:30am - 9:00am
• 3:00pm - 4:30pm

Te Whare o Tapatahi

• Monday to Saturday
• Morning shifts generally between 8:00am - 10:00am
• Afternoon shifts generally between 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Flexibility may be available depending on the successful applicant.

Essential Requirements

• Full, clean New Zealand Driver Licence.
• Experience driving vans and transporting passengers safely.
• Good communication skills.
• Basic IT skills for logging and reporting.
• First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain one.

Desirable

• Experience in transport, logistics, facilities, outreach, education, community services, or social services.
• Understanding of Te Ao Māori values and tikanga, or a willingness to learn.
• Experience working alongside rangatahi and vulnerable communities.
