The Garry Hurvitz Centre for Community Mental Health at SickKids (GH-CCMH) is a child and youth mental health center integrated with The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). GH-CCMH is also a member of the Thriving Minds Mental Health Access Collaborative with CAMH and SickKids and a core service provider in the Toronto sector of infant, child and youth mental health services funded by the Ministry of Health (MOH). GH-CCMH provides prevention, early intervention and health promotion services across the city, funded by MOH and other sources. As such, the Centre has an ambitious agenda to provide the highest quality, evidence-based care, offering a range of services from prevention and early intervention to counseling and therapy, assessment and intensive supports. Services are offered in person and in virtual format. We are seeking applicants for a full-time contract position as a Child and Family Therapist. The Child and Family Therapist provides direct mental health treatment services, including individual, family and/or group treatment to clients within the context of the family, school and community.

Key Responsibilities:

Therapeutic Services

  • Provides individual assessments, treatment and follow-up services to children and youth ages 0- 18 years within an assigned area
  • Provides individual therapy, family therapy and/or group treatment to children and youth ages 0 to 18 years within an assigned area
  • Provides case management, liaison and referral services for clients internally and externally completing supporting documentation in compliance with regulations, policies and procedures
  • Coordinates services with internal and external service providers requesting/reviewing documents and reports to inform clients of services and treatment plans
  • Collaborates with families, supervisors and inter-professional teams to develop services that support treatment plans
  • Attends case conferences as necessary with staff, clients, families and collateral resources, as appropriate
  • Prepares client documents and submits reporting information according to established procedures and deadlines
  • Provides academic expertise leading, teaching and training teams, students and/or volunteers and evaluates functions
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of therapeutic services and best practices within the industry
  • Makes decisions related to treatment needs of clients and on-going intervention techniques

  • Complies with the organization’s vision, policies and procedures
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by management

Qualifications:

  • Post-graduate Degree in a mental health discipline and a minimum of three years’ related clinical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, MSW is considered an asset
  • Membership in a professional College
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to provide therapeutic services to clients and families
  • Good problem-solving skills to analyze complex client issues and recommend solutions
  • Demonstrated skills in therapeutic engagement and behavioural-based interventions
  • First Aid/CPR, UMAB and Behavioural Management Techniques an asset
  • Good knowledge of MS Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as ability to use office equipment efficiently (telephone, scanner, photocopier and fax)
  • Ability to incorporate values of a culturally competent practice of diversity and inclusiveness in all aspects of work
  • Ability to engage in physical activities related to role play, board games, etc., as well as to perform/implement physical restraints as per training, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to travel to various locations, including clients’ homes
