Role Overview
The AWS Cloud Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, administration, optimisation and continuous improvement of AWS-based infrastructure and services.
Working closely with customers, support engineers, developers, network engineers and security teams, the Cloud Engineer delivers reliable, secure and scalable cloud solutions while driving automation and operational excellence across the AWS platform.
The role combines hands-on engineering, infrastructure automation, incident response, platform improvement and technical project delivery.
The role includes participation in a 24x7 on-call support rota and requires the ability to respond to operational incidents in accordance with established escalation and incident management procedures
Key Responsibilities
Cloud Infrastructure Engineering
- Work directly with customers to understand requirements and design secure, scalable and resilient AWS solutions.
- Build, deploy and maintain AWS cloud infrastructure across compute, storage, database, networking and serverless services.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure and application issues directly with customers, including on calls, to diagnose and resolve problems efficiently.
- Advise customers on AWS best practices, architectural improvements and optimisation opportunities.
- Perform capacity planning and infrastructure optimisation activities.
- Support cloud migrations and onboarding of new customer environments.
Automation \& Infrastructure as Code
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using:
- Terraform
- CloudFormation
- Git-based workflows
- Build automation to improve deployment consistency and operational efficiency.
- Implement CI/CD processes for infrastructure deployments.
- Reduce manual operational tasks through scripting and automation.
Platform Operations
- Act as an escalation point for complex incidents and service issues.
- Assist in major incident resolution and root cause analysis activities.
- Review platform alerts, trends and recurring issues.
- Maintain backup, disaster recovery and business continuity processes.
- Participate in on-call and out-of-hours support rotas as required.
Security \& Compliance
- Implement AWS security best practices and cloud governance controls.
- Support compliance requirements such as:
- ISO 27001
- NIS2
- Customer security standards
- Manage IAM roles, permissions and access policies.
- Support vulnerability remediation and cloud security improvements.
- Assist with customer audits and security reviews.
- Use AWS security services such as Security Hub and Inspector to identify, prioritise and remediate security findings.
Networking \& Connectivity
- Deploy and manage cloud networking solutions including:
- VPC, peering, Direct Connect and Transit Gateway
- VPN services: S2S and Client Access
- Security services: security groups, NACLs, WAF, Network Firewall.
- Route53 DNS
- Work with network engineering teams on hybrid cloud connectivity.
- Troubleshoot network performance and connectivity issues.
Documentation \& Knowledge Management
- Create and maintain technical documentation, standards and operational procedures.
- Produce architecture diagrams and deployment documentation.
- Contribute to knowledge sharing across the wider technical organisation.
- Maintain runbooks and support documentation for operational teams.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve reliability, security and operational efficiency.
- Recommend platform enhancements and new AWS capabilities.
- Participate in technical reviews and engineering initiatives.
- Drive adoption of infrastructure standards and best practices.
On-Call Participation
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call rota supporting AWS infrastructure, customer services and production environments.
- Act as an escalation point for Level 1 support engineers during operational incidents and service outages.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting and remediation of infrastructure, networking, platform and security-related issues within AWS environments.
- Lead or contribute to technical resolution activities during major incidents, working collaboratively with internal teams, customers and third-party vendors as required.
- Escalate incidents in accordance with agreed escalation procedures when additional expertise, management involvement or vendor engagement is required.
- Document troubleshooting activities, findings and remediation actions to support effective knowledge sharing and root cause analysis.
- Participate in post-incident reviews and identify opportunities to improve platform reliability, operational readiness, monitoring and automation.
Required Skills \& Experience
Essential
- Practical, hands-on experience administering AWS environments in a live or production setting.
- Strong understanding of core AWS services, including:
- Compute: EC2, Lambda, Step Functions
- Storage: S3, EBS, FSx
- Database: DMS and RDS for SQL Server and MySQL
- Networking: VPC, ELB, WAF, VPN
- Security \& Identity: KMS, IAM, SSO.
- Management/Monitoring: AWS Organizations, CloudWatch, Systems Manager, etc.
- Good understanding of Windows and Linux administration.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals:
- TCP/IP
- Routing
- DNS
- VPN technologies
- Firewalls and Security Groups
- Experience using Git for version control.
- Good working knowledge of CI/CD tools and processes.
- Experience troubleshooting infrastructure and application issues, including working directly with customers, on calls where required, to diagnose problems and identify opportunities to optimise performance, security and cost.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable
- CloudFormation experience.
- Serverless and automation experience.
- Experience supporting production workloads.
- Experience with monitoring services such as Datadog.
- Exposure to container technologies including Docker or Kubernetes.
- Scripting experience using:
- PowerShell

- Experience within managed services, service provider or enterprise environments.
- Understanding of monitoring and observability platforms.
