AWS Application Developer – Superhighway About the role Superhighway is how Schroders unlocks AI engineering at scale. It's not just an internal developer platform, and it's not just a landing zone — it's the paved road that lets every engineering team build in an AI-native way: agents as first-class developers, automation and governance built in, and a fast, safe path from idea to production. We're building it now — greenfield, while it's being used — and we're looking for a hands-on senior engineer to help shape it from the ground up. This is a build role, close to the code. The systems and patterns you build won't serve one team — they're the foundation every builder in the company works on top of. Your job is to make other engineers faster and to bring AI-native engineering within reach for all of them. When you get it right, the whole engineering org moves quicker. The team You'll join the Superhighway Core Team. We build three things: The self-serve platform — the API, the superhighway CLI, the management console, and the integrations that connect it to AWS, GitHub, Entra, Snowflake, and Schroders' core systems. The quick starts — the reusable skills, patterns, and starting points that define how applications should be built on Superhighway, following best practice by default. The operational and governance checks — a mix of deterministic, scripted checks and agentic applications that reason about whether an application meets our regulatory obligations. Together they ensure applications built on Superhighway stay compliant, without slowing teams down. Together these make the paved road not just fast, but safe by default: teams move quickly, and compliance is built into the road rather than bolted on afterwards. The quick starts are where deep application-development experience matters most — in building them, we work with engineering teams across the firm to define how agents should build applications. Those same skills are then used two ways: by us, to build Superhighway itself, and by every team that builds applications on top of it. We build on two governed foundations that other teams own: the Landing Zone (our guardrailed AWS account estate and networking baseline) and the Agentic AI Platform (the Bedrock/AgentCore runtime our applications call for AI). Superhighway turns those foundations into something bigger — the default, AI-native way to build at Schroders. We're agentic-first: we assume the developer on the other end is working with an AI coding agent, and that autonomous agents are first-class consumers of everything we build. As an early platform, the first teams carry some “pioneer tax” — and our measure of success is adoption, not uptime. What you'll do Build the self-serve platform — control plane services, APIs, the CLI, integrations, and developer workflows behind the paved road. Build the quick starts and skills that define best-practice application development on Superhighway — reusable patterns used both to build the platform and by teams building on top of it. Build the operational and governance checks — both deterministic scripted checks and agentic, reasoning-based applications — that keep applications built on Superhighway compliant with regulatory obligations, without manual gatekeeping. Work with engineering teams across the firm to define how agents should build applications: the patterns, guardrails, and paved paths they follow. Develop AWS-native applications and tools using serverless services, Step Functions, GitHub Actions, and Infrastructure as Code. Automate the software delivery lifecycle, operational readiness, and engineering controls — so teams adopt the platform safely and consistently, with less manual effort. Raise platform quality through code review, test automation, observability, documentation, and secure-by-default delivery. What we're looking for Essential Strong application-development experience — enough real-world app-dev depth to define how applications should be built well, and to encode that as patterns and quick starts others rely on. This is the core of the role. Strong AWS application development and software engineering experience, ideally on developer tooling, delivery platforms, or cloud-native developer workflows. You already use AI daily for engineering work. You build with a coding harness/agent as a matter of course, and the more experience you have driving one — the closer to spec-driven development, the better. This is central to how we work, not a bonus. Solid knowledge of AWS serverless and event-driven services — Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions — and how to integrate them. Experience automating CI/CD, SDLC, and engineering controls (GitHub Actions, IaC, automated evidence capture). Experience building automated governance, compliance, or operational controls into delivery pipelines — turning policy and regulatory requirements into code and evidence. You're comfortable doing this both as deterministic scripted checks and, where judgement is needed, as agentic applications that reason over the problem. (Financial services / regulated-industry experience is a plus.) Good engineering practice as second nature: API design, automated testing, observability, documentation, and secure-by-default delivery. Comfortable operating independently in a fast-moving programme and contributing from early on. Nice to have Python/FastAPI for building production APIs and services. TypeScript/React for web front ends and developer consoles. Experience building internal developer platforms or “platform-as-a-product.” Experience building agentic applications, or designing APIs/CLIs and reusable skills for both human and agent consumers. (You don't need to have built agentic apps — but experience working through a harness matters.) What you'll be like A hands-on engineer with a builder's mindset — happy close to the code, shipping practical capability. Fluent with AI-assisted engineering: you reach for a harness by default and think in terms of specs and outcomes. Opinionated about good application development — and able to turn that judgement into patterns others can follow. Pragmatic and self-sufficient, able to make progress where priorities shift as the platform is proven with real users. Product-minded and customer-focused, genuinely interested in making the paved road useful. Security- and automation-conscious: you build controls and quality in, rather than leaning on manual process. Clear and collaborative across platform, application, security, identity, and service-management stakeholders.
