Auto Painter

Job Summary

The Auto Painter is responsible for carrying out vehicle painting and refinishing work, including surface preparation, colour matching, paint application, polishing, and finishing. The role requires attention to detail to ensure vehicles are restored to a high-quality, professional finish in accordance with workshop standards.

Key Duties \& Responsibilities:

• Inspect vehicle body panels and identify areas requiring painting or refinishing.
• Prepare surfaces by sanding, grinding, cleaning, and removing old paint, rust, dust, and other contaminants.
• Apply body filler/putty where required and ensure surfaces are smooth and properly prepared.
• Apply primer and ensure proper drying and curing before applying paint.
• Mask windows, trims, lights, tyres, handles, and other areas that should not be painted.
• Mix and prepare paints, primers, thinners, hardeners, and other materials according to manufacturer specifications.
• Match vehicle colours accurately using paint codes, colour charts, and appropriate colour-matching techniques.
• Operate spray guns and other painting equipment safely and effectively.
• Apply primer, basecoat, and clear coat evenly to achieve the required finish.
• Maintain appropriate paint thickness, coverage, and consistency.
• Carry out spot repairs, panel painting, full-body painting, and touch-up work as required.
• Inspect painted surfaces for defects such as runs, sags, orange peel, uneven coverage, dust particles, or colour mismatch.
• Carry out sanding, polishing, buffing, and finishing work to achieve a smooth and high-quality appearance.
• Correct painting defects and rework areas when necessary.
• Ensure the final paint finish matches adjacent panels in colour, shade, gloss, and texture.
• Conduct final inspection before releasing the vehicle to the supervisor.
• Operate and maintain spray guns, compressors, sanding machines, polishers, mixing equipment, and other painting tools.
• Clean spray guns and painting equipment after use.
• Maintain the paint booth and surrounding work area in a clean and organized condition.
• Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the Workshop Supervisor.
• Maintain proper storage and handling of paints and chemicals.
• Follow all company HSE procedures and workshop safety requirements.
• Use appropriate PPE, including respirators/masks, gloves, safety glasses, coveralls, and safety shoes.
• Handle paints, solvents, thinners, and other chemicals safely.
• Ensure proper ventilation during painting and drying operations.
• Follow fire-safety procedures when working with flammable materials.
• Dispose of paint waste, used containers, solvents, and other hazardous materials according to company procedures.
• Keep the workplace free from unnecessary hazards and contamination.
• Coordinate with Body Repair Technicians, Mechanics, Workshop Supervisors, and other garage personnel.
• Review job cards and understand the required repair and painting work before starting.
• Inform the supervisor of additional painting or bodywork requirements identified during the job.
• Complete assigned jobs within the required time and quality standards.
• Report completed work and any technical issues to the Workshop Supervisor.

Required Qualifications \& Experience:

• Minimum 3–5 years of experience as an Auto Painter in an automotive garage, body shop, or vehicle repair workshop.
• Experience in painting cars, buses, trucks, vans, and/or commercial vehicles is preferred.
• Good knowledge of automotive paint preparation and application techniques.
• Experience with spray painting, colour matching, polishing, and finishing.
• Knowledge of primers, basecoats, clear coats, thinners, hardeners, and related materials.
• Ability to identify and correct paint defects.
• Ability to read and understand vehicle job cards and work instructions.
• Technical/vocational qualification in Automotive Body Repair, Painting, or a related field is an advantage.
