Position Overview

The Assistant Technical Manager is a full-time, on-site position responsible for supporting the Technical Manager in coordinating the company's technical operations relating to ASSB's medical and laboratory equipment portfolio.

This role is ideal for an experienced Service Engineer or Senior Technical Engineer who is ready to take the next step into leadership. The successful candidate will assist in coordinating technical activities including equipment installation, commissioning, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and after-sales support while providing day-to-day guidance to Service Engineers and Technicians.

The Assistant Technical Manager will also work closely with the Sales, Business Development, Product Management, and Operations teams by providing technical support during customer visits, product demonstrations, evaluations, and implementation projects.

Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Operations

  • Support the Technical Manager in coordinating daily technical service operations.
  • Assist in planning and monitoring equipment installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Ensure service activities are completed efficiently and within agreed response times.
  • Support engineers in resolving technical issues and field service challenges.
  • Participate in complex troubleshooting and provide technical guidance where required.

Team Coordination

  • Provide day-to-day guidance and support to Service Engineers and Technicians.
  • Assist in coordinating manpower allocation for service calls, preventive maintenance, installations, and emergency breakdowns.
  • Monitor engineers' work progress and ensure service quality standards are maintained.
  • Support onboarding and mentoring of newly recruited engineers and technicians.
  • Encourage continuous learning, teamwork, and professional development.

Project Coordination

  • Assist in coordinating hospital and laboratory installation projects.
  • Monitor project schedules and communicate progress to the Technical Manager.
  • Ensure equipment installations are completed according to manufacturer specifications and customer requirements.
  • Support preparation of project documentation, commissioning records, and handover reports.
  • Participate in equipment evaluations and customer acceptance testing.

Customer Support

  • Provide technical consultation during customer visits.
  • Conduct product demonstrations and user training programmes.
  • Support customer enquiries and assist in resolving technical complaints.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with healthcare professionals and end users.
  • Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction through responsive technical support.

Documentation \& Quality

  • Prepare and review service reports, preventive maintenance reports, installation reports, and technical documentation.
  • Assist in maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and service documentation.
  • Ensure all documentation is completed accurately and submitted on time.
  • Support compliance with company quality procedures and documentation requirements.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Follow company quality management procedures and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Support compliance with Medical Device Authority (MDA) Malaysia requirements, GDPMDS, and relevant quality standards.
  • Ensure service activities comply with manufacturer recommendations and company policies.
  • Promote safe working practices during all technical activities.

Manufacturer \& Supplier Coordination

  • Assist in communicating with manufacturers regarding technical enquiries, warranty claims, spare parts, and technical updates.
  • Participate in manufacturer technical training programmes.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to the Technical Manager when necessary.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve service quality and operational efficiency.
  • Recommend practical improvements to technical procedures and service workflows.
  • Participate in internal technical meetings and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new medical technologies and product developments through ongoing learning.

Minimum RequirementsExperience

  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience servicing medical devices, laboratory equipment, diagnostic instruments, or healthcare technologies.
  • Experience performing equipment installation, commissioning, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, calibration, and customer support.
  • Previous experience acting as a Senior Engineer, Lead Engineer, Project Coordinator, or mentoring junior engineers is an advantage.

Education

Bachelor's Degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Medical Electronics
  • Biomedical Science
  • Mechatronics Engineering
  • Instrumentation Engineering
  • or another related engineering or technical discipline.

Technical Knowledge

  • Good understanding of medical device servicing and maintenance practices.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Medical Device Authority (MDA) Malaysia regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with preventive maintenance planning and service documentation.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and service documentation.
  • Basic understanding of project coordination and scheduling.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Good organisational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple service activities simultaneously.

  • Good command of English and Bahasa Malaysia, both written and spoken.

Other Requirements

  • Willingness to travel throughout Malaysia when required.
  • Possess a valid Malaysian driving licence.
  • Own transportation is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with the following experience will have an added advantage:

  • Previous experience working for a medical device distributor or medical equipment manufacturer.
  • Experience supporting government or private hospital customers.
  • Experience participating in hospital equipment installations or implementation projects.
  • Manufacturer-certified technical training.
  • Experience conducting customer product demonstrations and user training.
  • Familiarity with Malaysian healthcare procurement processes.
  • Basic knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), equipment connectivity, or healthcare IT integration.
