Souvlaki Halswell NZ Limited is looking for an experienced Assistant Manager to assist in day-to-day operations, and support the owners to deliver excellent food and customer service. You should be proficient in handling busy hospitality environment, with rotational shifts as we plan to extend trading hours into late night service.

About the role
As Assistant Manager, you will be responsible for running the daily operations of the restaurant and ensuring consistent service, compliance, and performance. You will work closely with the owners and kitchen team to maintain standards, manage costs, and support team development.
Key responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day retail store operations, including opening and closing procedures.
- Plan and organise staff rosters to ensure adequate coverage during trading hours and busy periods.
- Assign duties to retail staff and monitor daily tasks to ensure the store operates efficiently.
- Ensure the sales floor, checkout areas, stockroom and other store facilities remain clean, safe, organised and presentable.
- Ensure store policies, health and safety requirements and security procedures are followed.
- Ensure customers receive prompt, professional service and quality products.
- Respond to customer enquiries, complaints and feedback professionally and promptly.
- Assist staff with difficult customer situations, complicated sales transactions, returns, exchanges and refunds.
- Monitor customer service and sales standards to maintain a consistently positive customer experience.
- Support the team on the sales floor during busy periods, including assisting customers, processing sales and answering product enquiries.
- Supervise, train and support retail sales staff in their daily duties.
- Provide instructions regarding customer service, sales procedures, product knowledge, cash handling and store policies.
- Monitor staff performance, provide feedback and address performance or conduct concerns when required.
- Coordinate shift handovers and communicate operational priorities to staff.
- Support the recruitment and induction of new retail team members when required.
- Maintain a positive and professional workplace culture and encourage strong teamwork.
- Monitor stock levels and coordinate ordering and replenishment of products.
- Receive and check incoming stock against invoices and delivery records.
- Ensure products are correctly priced, labelled, displayed and rotated where required.
- Coordinate product displays, promotional materials and merchandising activities.
- Maintain accurate records of stock received, sold, returned, damaged or wasted.
- Assist with regular stocktakes and investigate stock discrepancies.
- Supervise checkout operations and ensure cash-handling procedures are followed.
- Check daily sales records, cash takings and electronic transactions to identify and resolve discrepancies.
- Ensure revenue received matches recorded sales and prepare end-of-day cash reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate records relating to sales, stock, staff duties and store operations.
Skills and experience required
- Minimum 1 year of related experience in restaurant or any qualification above level 4
- Proven ability to manage a team, rosters, and day-to-day restaurant operations
- Good understanding of food safety, hygiene, and health and safety requirements in New Zealand
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Comfortable working rotational shifts, including evenings and late-night trading, weekends and public holidays
- Confident using POS systems and able to maintain basic records (stock, sales, costs, invoices)
