Able-Bodied (AB) Seaman COP II/5

Join a professional shipboard deck team as an Able Bodied Seaman (AB) on board our fleet of vessels. This role supports safe deck operations, cargo handling, mooring, maintenance, and lookout duties under the direction of the Bosun, Chief Officer, and Master. The AB will contribute to the vessel’s compliance with international and company safety and environmental standards while working as part of a multicultural shipboard crew.

Primary Responsibilities for Able Bodied Seaman - deck operations, maintenance, safety

• The role of the Able-Bodied Seaman / IR is to carry out all tasks and duties as directed by the Chief Officer or their nominee thereby enabling the Deck Department to operate in a safe and efficient manner.
• The Able-Bodied Seaman / IR is to ensure that all their tasks and duties are carried out in a safe and efficient manner using relevant safety equipment.
• The Abled Bodied Seaman may also assume gangway / fire patrol watches / security patrol duties if required
• They are to ensure that a valid Work Permit is in force for work requiring such a Permit.
• The Able-Bodied Seaman / IR reports to the Bosun / Deck Supervisor / Chief IR.
• They are responsible for reporting any malfunction of any equipment they are using or have knowledge of being in use, to the Bosun / Deck Supervisor / Chief IR or the Deck Officer on watch.
• The Able-Bodied Seaman’s responsibilities also include reporting as required by Integrated Management System.

• The Able-Bodied Seaman's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Correct and safe operation of the anchor and retrieving winches and the proper handling of the towing bridle and the anchor handling equipment.
  • Operate the vessel's forklift truck provided they are a certified driver.
  • They may have to perform the duties of a Helicopter Deck Attendant and/ or a Helicopter Fireguard, providing they have the qualifications.
  • The cleanliness and general hygiene of the vessel.
  • Maintaining mooring ropes and wires, cordage, rigging and running gear under the direction of the Bosun.
  • Maintaining steelwork and paintwork as required by the Bosun.
  • Maintaining sea watches as lookouts or helmsmen as and when required.
  • Assisting with mooring and unmooring the vessel as directed.
  • Assisting with deck operations as directed by the Bosun, e.g. anchor handling operations.
  • Assisting with cargo operations as directed by the Bosun.
  • Assisting with operations in port.
  • Assisting with the operation of winches and cranes as required.
  • Handling of stores / garbage as directed.
  • The cleanliness of their accommodation, toilets and mess rooms.
  • Operating the ship’s workboat(s) and rescue boat(s) as required when designated as Coxswain or Boat’s Crew by the Master (appropriate training, qualification and certification is required to be held in order to be the Coxswain).
  • Operating the ship’s cranes as required and when designated as crane driver by the Master. (Appropriate training, qualification and certification is required to be held in order to be the crane operator).
  • Specific duties during Emergencies is stated on the Muster List or set out in the Emergency Response Manual.
  • The Able-Bodied Seaman / IR is to carry out any lawful command as requested by Shipboard Management.
  • Wearing, inspecting and caring for required personal protective equipment

Required Qualifications - certification, experience, fitness

• Certification as per STCW reg II/5
• STCW endorsements
• Valid Medical certificate
• Minimum 12 months of experience in rank and similar type of vessel..

Preferred Skills - specialized experience, equipment, teamwork

• Experience working on AHTS, supply, tanker, or offshore support vessels, including mooring operations, anchor handling assistance, or deck cargo duties.
• Training in advanced seamanship, rigging, basic crane/derrick operations awareness, or H2S/shore-based safety courses is advantageous.
• Familiarity with maintenance tasks such as painting, metalwork preparation, and preventive upkeep of deck machinery and fittings.
• Strong teamwork, reliability, and a positive safety attitude with the ability to follow direction and assist in mentoring less experienced crew.

Work Environment \& Conditions - seafaring life, rotations, safety

• Seagoing position with rotational deployments; assignments may include extended periods onboard with defined on/off rotation schedules.
• Work in offshore, port, and confined-space environments; ability to operate safely around moving machinery, at heights, and during inclement weather when required.
• Must comply with medical fitness standards, vaccinations, and company pre-employment screening requirements.
