About The Company

Our client is an Auckland-based immersive media studio currently developing an ambitious VR experience that combines engaging interactive storytelling with high-quality real-time visuals. They are a purpose-driven, collaborative team that loves combining art, technology, and social good. They value adaptability, creative problem-solving, and ensuring every team member feels supported while pushing the boundaries of immersive media.

The Role - What You’ll Do

You will work closely with artists, animators, and developers to ensure assets, shaders, rigs, and real-time content are technically robust, optimized, and production-ready for VR. You will help solve technical challenges across the pipeline, improve workflows, and assist with hands-on implementation inside Unity.

A key focus will be identifying performance bottlenecks and balancing high visual quality with strict VR performance constraints. From time to time, you may also jump in to create or support rigging systems for characters and props to keep the animation pipeline running smoothly.

What You Bring - Key Skills \& Traits

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Technical Artist within games, VR, real-time production, or interactive media
  • Strong practical experience working inside Unity
  • Deep understanding of real-time rendering workflows, asset pipelines, shaders, materials, and lighting
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot technical art issues and optimize scenes for VR performance
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently in a remote freelance capacity

Desirable

  • Character and/or prop rigging experience (highly encouraged!)
  • Experience creating tools, automation scripts, or workflow improvements using Python or C#
  • Familiarity with tools like Maya, Blender, Houdini, Substance Suite, and version control (Git/Perforce)
  • Understanding of profiling and debugging tools for real-time engines

Perks \& Culture * Fully remote flexibility across Australia and New Zealand * Ideal part-time hours (approx. 20 hours/week) to balance with other freelance commitments * Work on a cutting-edge VR project with a meaningful "social good" focus * Collaborative, innovative, and highly technically minded studio culture
